Why You'll Love This Recipe
- Rich Chocolate: This Vegan Chocolate Smoothie combines the richness of Dutch cocoa powder, with the velvety smoothness of almond butter and coconut milk for a healthier chocolate treat. If you like Bone Broth Chocolate Milkshake, you'll love this!
- Thick and Creamy: I also use banana that makes this organic smoothie thick and creamy, just like Lemon Blueberry Smoothie.
- No Added Sweetener: This healthy chocolate smoothie has no added sugar or sweetener.
- Vegan: This healthy chocolate smoothie is dairy free, vegan, and it’s so good! Even if you are not vegan (like me), you'll love this organic smoothie because it's loaded with good for you ingredients that taste amazing! Just like Vegan Raspberry Chocolate Chip Cookies, vegan or not, this recipe is so delish!
Ingredients

- Dutch Cocoa Powder: Use organic Dutch cocoa powder for a rich and smooth chocolate flavor. If you want to use something like cacao powder instead, you can, but I like the sweeter chocolate flavor that Dutch cocoa provides.
- Coconut Smoothie: I know we are making a smoothie, but I use a coconut smoothie for the liquid. Both Harmless Harvest and Genius Juice basically make the same exact thing. It's super thick and creamy, which is what makes this chocolate smoothie so creamy. If you can't find this, use a full fat coconut milk from a can.
- Almond Butter: I use organic almond butter, but I've also made this with peanut butter and cashew butter before too. If you like to make homemade almond butter with just plain almonds, you can also use that too!

Tips for Creamy Vegan Chocolate Smoothie With Almond Butter
- The ratios really matter here, so don’t add in more ice, and don’t add in more coconut smoothie. Doing so will result in a less chocolate flavor, one that is not as good. This smoothie relies on the ratios!
- If you want to sub peanut butter for the almond butter, you can do that! I use both, but I prefer the almond butter as it makes it more chocolatey, otherwise, the peanut butter flavor tends to take over. You can also use cashew butter if you prefer too!
- If you can't find the coconut smoothie, you can use full fat coconut milk from a can. This will be most similar. Or, you can also use coconut milk and few tablespoons of yogurt. Because the coconut smoothie is so creamy, it’s like a combination of using milk and yogurt, which really makes a difference in this smoothie because it has so few ingredients. While almond milk, oat milk, or regular coconut milk will work, the result won't be as creamy.
- When starting the blender, turn it on low first, and allow it to crush up all the ice until you don’t hear anymore big chunks of ice. Then turn it up to high to incorporate everything, blend up the pumpkin seeds, and blend in your powders or supplements if you’re adding. This way it will make a really smooth smoothie!
- If you want to use cow’s milk, you can do that instead. I would use a mix of whole milk and yogurt to make sure you get the creamy texture!
How to Make a Creamy Vegan Chocolate Smoothie

- In a high powered blender, add the banana, ice, coconut smoothie, cocoa powder, almond butter, and pumpkin seeds.

- Blend on low until you don’t hear big ice chunks anymore. Slowly turn the blender up until you are blending at high speed. Blend until smooth and creamy.

Recipe FAQ's
Yes, you can use coconut milk, almond milk, or oat milk if you want. I prefer to use the coconut smoothie as they are incredibly thick and creamy, which is really what makes this smoothie so special, in my opinion. If you are going to use milk in its place, I highly recommend using a canned coconut milk so it's still thick and creamy. Or if you are using a regular milk, add in a couple tablespoons of yogurt to help with creaminess.
Yes, if you don't have pumpkin seeds or don't like them feel free to omit them completely or replace them with a seed you do like. But, I really love how the pumpkin seeds provide a subtle salty and earthy flavor to this smoothie. So, if you haven't tried them with it, I urge you to give it a try first!
