Ingredients

individual ingredients for dog birthday cake without peanut butter laid out against a white background.
  • Banana: The bananas act as a great binder in this cake as well as provide natural sweetness.
  • Honey: I also use some honey for a little natural sweetness that’s a great dog safe sweetener for your furry friend.
  • All Purpose Flour: I use organic all purpose flour, but whole wheat flour also works too. And if you have a gluten free doggo you can use a gluten free flour blend that works for your pup too.
  • Blueberries: You can use fresh or frozen blueberries inside the cake, either works. If you’re using frozen, you don’t need to thaw them, you can just add them in. If you don’t have blueberries, strawberries also work great, just be sure to de-stem them as the stems are not good for dogs.
  • Greek Yogurt: I use organic plain Greek yogurt for the “frosting”. But, if your dog is dairy free, you can use a coconut based plain yogurt or even our Dog Friendly Whipped Cream that's dairy free too!
  • Freeze-Dried Blueberries: I use organic freeze-dried blueberries for a little decoration on top as they look like sprinkles, but are completely safe for dogs. But, fresh also works. If you have a girl dog, you can also use freeze dried strawberries for a little pink decoration too!

Baker’s Tips

  • Always weigh ingredients for the best results.
  • You can use a hand mixer or stand mixer if you prefer, this recipe is super flexible.
  • If you want to use another kind of berry inside the cake, strawberries (just make sure they are de-stemmed), blackberries or raspberries are also dog safe.
  • If you do want to use peanut butter, you can use it for the frosting in place of Greek yogurt. Or you can also mix in a little peanut butter into the greek yogurt too!
  • If you’re making in advance of a dog party, be sure to store this cake in the fridge because of the Greek yogurt frosting.
  • Make sure to cut into small slices for dogs and even cut up into pieces so they can easily eat it and prevent choking.
  • If you have leftovers, store in an airtight container in the fridge and use for treats or even as a food topper.

  1. To assemble the cake: I like to trim one of the cake layers as the bananas can make the cakes a little domed. I do this just with a bread knife and just trim off the top. This trimmed off cake makes a great little treat for your dog if they are helping in the kitchen!

Dog Birthday Cake Without Peanut Butter FAQ’s

Why make a dog birthday cake without peanut butter?

You may wonder why you would need a dog cake without peanut butter, but believe it or not, just like humans, some dogs cannot have peanut butter! And, so if you are hosting a dog birthday party and want to be allergy friendly, this is the perfect cake to bake so everyone can enjoy. Or, if you have a dog who can't have peanut butter, they will love this recipe!

What can I use instead of peanut butter in a dog cake?

We use bananas here in place of peanut butter inside the cake. The bananas make this cake super moist and fluffy and they provide natural sweetness and flavor your dog will love.

Can humans eat this cake?

Yes, humans can definitely eat this cake too! But, it may just be a little bland. If you are looking for a matching human cake recipe, my Blueberry buttermilk banana bread is a great option. You can frost it using vanilla frosting recipe too!

Can dogs eat blueberries in birthday cake?

Yes, blueberries are a wonderful dog safe fruit that works really well in cakes. Plus, your dog will think they are super tasty too!

Can I use another fruit besides blueberries?

Yes, you can use strawberries inside the cake (just be sure to de-stem them and slice into pieces). And then top with freeze dried strawberries to match! Blackberries or raspberries are another dog-safe fruit that also works great. If you don’t have any of these, you can also leave out the berries inside the cake as well.

Can dogs eat Greek yogurt frosting?

Yes, dogs can eat plain Greek yogurt, which makes a great “frosting” for a dog cake. Just be sure the Greek yogurt is plain without any added sugars or flavors.

Does this cake need to be refrigerated?

Yes, because of the Greek yogurt “frosting” it does need to be stored in the fridge.

How much birthday cake can I give my dog?

This birthday cake is just like any other dog treat. It should be fed in moderation and that can vary depending on the size of your dog. While it's fun to let them indulge on their special day, also be mindful that if they eat too much their stomach can become upset. So, just give them a small amount like you would for other treats depending on their size.

Can I make this cake in advance?

Yes, you can make this cake in advance if prepping for a dog birthday party. I would recommend baking the cake the day ahead, and let it cool completely then wrap the cake layers in plastic wrap tightly and refrigerate. Then, the day of the party you can assemble it as the assembly is so quick and easy and it will stay much better this way. If you need to assemble before the party, just store in the fridge until cake time.

How should I store this?

If you have leftovers, store in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3 days. Leftover cake makes a great doggy treat or even fancy food topper!
