I am constantly making homemade dog treats for John John as I refuse to buy treats that are full of harmful ingredients or highly processed. So, these healthy dog treats are a great recipe if you are a crazy dog mom like me!
John John is also a picky little Pug (surprising I know!). My old Pug would eat almost anything, but John John is his own person. His usual treats are just plain chicken pieces (no, he’s not spoiled! Haha). So, when I make homemade dog treats that he actually likes, I know we have a winner.

Why You’ll Love This Recipe
3 Ingredients: These Veggie Treats for Dogs have just 3 ingredients — veggies, coconut oil, and nutritional yeast. While I use sweet potatoes, carrots and beets for veggies you can use just one of them as well to make it easier.
Health Benefits: These homemade dog treats have health benefits your pup! With just a few simple ingredients, your dog will get added nutrients along with a delicious treat.
Tasty: Your dog will go nuts for these healthy dog treats, they will love them so much more than anything you can buy from the store! Plus, they are actually good for them!

Ingredients & Health Benefits
- Sweet Potato: Organic sweet potatoes have vitamin A, fiber, antioxidants, and more. They are a healthy carb for dogs and are John John’s favorite carb!
- Beets: Organic beets are good for dogs in moderation and contain fiber, potassium and more. I’m using Chioggia beets here as we got them in our farm box. But traditional red beets also work!
- Carrots: I love carrots for dogs as they have beta carotene and vitamin A. Plus they’re a sweeter veggie that dogs love and John John eats them daily!
- Coconut Oil: I coat these homemade dog treats with organic coconut oil so they crisp up. Coconut oil is great for digestion and your dog’s skin and coat.
- Nutritional Yeast: I add a little sprinkle of organic nutritional yeast on top. This provides B vitamins, protein and can also help with gut health. Plus it gives these homemade dog treats a cheesy and salty flavor that dogs love!

Tools Needed
- Cutting Board: You'll need a cutting board to remove the skins from the sweet potato and beets.
- Sharp Knife: You'll need a sharp knife to remove skins from the sweet potato and beets.
- Mandolin: I use a mandolin to ensure these chips are super thin and crisp up well. If you don’t have a mandolin you can use a sharp chefs knife to ensure they are cut thin.
- Mixing Bowl: You’ll need a mixing bowl to coat the veggies.
- Baking Sheet: You’ll need two half sheet pans to bake these healthy dog treats.
- Parchment Paper: I use nontoxic parchment paper to ensure these chips don’t stick to the pan.

Step by Step Instructions
Step 1
Preheat the oven to 375°F. Line 2 baking sheets with parchment paper.
Step 2
Peel the sweet potato and beets. Ensure you get all the skin off as it is not good for dogs.
Wash the veggies well and use a mandolin at 1/8-inches to slice all the veggies.

Step 3
Add to a mixing bowl with the coconut oil and nutritional yeast and mix together.
Step 4
Spread onto the two baking sheets and spread them out evenly to ensure nothing is overlapping, otherwise the chips won’t crisp up.
Step 5
Bake for 20 to 25 minutes or until they start to turn golden brown, you don’t want to burn them. Flip chips if needed and ensure even spacing so nothing is overlapped. Then lower oven temperature to 250°F and bake for another 30 to 40 minutes until dry and crunchy.

Baker’s Tips
- Ensure that the veggies do not overlap when they’re on the baking sheets. This will make sure that they crisp up well.
- You can use all three of the veggies I used or also just one kind.
- Be sure to flip or move chips if you see them getting a bit golden brown.
- You can bake a little longer to ensure these are crispy.
- Smaller chips can be removed if they’re done and you can leave bigger ones in longer if needed.
How to Store
Store in an airtight container for up to 7 days.
FAQ’s
