Apples are John Johnā€™s favorite fruit. He eats them daily and knows when itā€™s ā€œapple timeā€ and waits by the table until I get it out and cut it for us to share. Itā€™s the cutest thing ever.

So, I wanted to make him a homemade apple dog treat for Thanksgiving this year. I came up with the Apple Crisp for Dogs because it combines two of his favorite things ā€” apples and granola.

Ingredients & Health Benefits

  • Apples: I use organic Fuji Apple for this recipe as this is one of John Johnā€™s favorite kinds. You can use any kind of apple you buy for you. Apples have vitamin C, antioxidants, and fiber in the peels (so donā€™t peel it!). They are also a natural antihistamine for dogs which can help reduce inflammation and allergies.
  • Pumpkin: I use Nummy Tum Tum Organic Pumpkin in the apple filling. Pumpkin is a superfood for your dog. The fiber in pumpkin helps aid digestion and keep your dogs tummy happy. It also has vitamin A, C, and E and can improve the health, skin, coat, and more!
  • Coconut Oil: I use organic coconut oil in the crumb topping. Coconut oil can help improve digestion, brain health, and immunity.
  • Honey: Organic raw honey gives this homemade apple dog treat a little sweetness. Honey is also antimicrobial, antibacterial and it can also help with allergies.
  • Oats: I use organic rolled oats in the crumb topping. This healthy carb can also help dogs with anxiety as itā€™s rich in magnesium, which can help regulate body functions, including mood! It also can improve bone health, skin health, and digestive health.
  • Greek Yogurt: I use organic plain Greek yogurt to act as “whipped cream”. Though, you could also use my Dog Friendly Whipped Cream recipe too! Greek yogurt has probiotics for your dog that are great for their gut health. John John eats Greek yogurt every day. Just be sure to buy organic plain Greek yogurt with no added sugars or flavors. We like Nancy's Organic, Maple Hill Creamery, and Straus.

Tools Needed

  • Ramekin: I use two 8 ounce ramekins to bake this in.
  • Mixing Bowl: Youā€™ll need two small mixing bowls for the filling and the topping.
  • Countertop Oven: I use my Cafe Countertop Oven because this dessert is so small. But you can also use the regular oven as well if you donā€™t have a countertop oven.

Step 3

Top the apples with the oat mixture.

Step 4

Bake at 350Ā°F for 15 to 20 minutes, or until the oat mixture is toasted and golden brown. I actually do this in my countertop oven for ease, but regular oven also works.

Step 5

Allow the apple crisp to cool completely. Add a dollop of Greek yogurt on top and serve to your dog. (If you have a small dog, make sure to only give them a small portion at a time).

Bakerā€™s Tips

  • I use my Cafe Countertop Oven for this because itā€™s so small, I donā€™t want to waste heating up the oven! But you could also use the regular oven too.
  • You can use any kind of apple that you buy for yourself. But John John really prefers the sweeter variety like Fuji, Gala or Pink Lady.
  • If you have a small dog (like John John) this may be two or more servings of treats per ramekin. If you have a larger dog they may be able to eat this in one serving.
  • If you have more than 2 dogs, you can double or even triple this recipe to make more.
