What is blood orange flavor?

Blood oranges have a unique flavor that is more robust than traditional oranges. And, because of the anthocyanins found in blood oranges—a pigment not present in regular lemons—this Blood Orange Lemonade is naturally pink! I think they have more of a berry flavor compared to traditional oranges lighter and sweeter taste. While this seasonal orange still has a citrus vibe, it also has floral undertones making it a great pairing to tart lemons! Blood oranges are seasonal and best when enjoyed in season!

a bowl of cane sugar and a bowl of water in a bowl on a white countertop.
  • Cane Sugar: You’ll need organic cane sugar to make simple syrup, which is how we are sweetening this organic lemonade.
  • Blood Oranges: You’ll need blood oranges for that bright ruby color and unique flavor. But, if you don’t have blood oranges, regular oranges will also work and will still make a delicious homemade lemonade but with oranges!
  • Lemons: You can juice lemons to get lemon juice or you can also use lemon juice form a bottle, either works for this organic lemonade.

Blood Orange Lemonade Tips

  • Sugar Free: Make this Blood Orange Lemonade sugar free by skipping the sugar. Instead, add in the blood orange juice, lemon juice, and water. Then sweeten with stevia to taste. I recommend using NuNaturals Organic Clear Stevia for the best taste!
  • Make It Sparkling: Try making this sparkling simply by replacing the additional 4 1/2 cups water with sparkling water!
  • Make It Seasonal: If you can't find blood oranges as they are not in season, feel free to use regular oranges instead. You'll have a little different flavor, but it will still be delicious!
  • Flavor Twists: Add in fresh herbs like mint or basil for a light and refreshing summer drink. If you're enjoying this during the fall, try adding a pinch of cinnamon or cloves for a lightly spiced Blood Orange Lemonade that makes a wonderul cocktail mixer!
