Why add bone broth to queso dip?
Bone broth is a liquid that's made by slow simmering beef or chicken bones along with veggies and spices. The bones, veggies, and spices are slow cooked for a long period of time, over 24 hours. The flavor of bone broth is very similar to chicken broth, beef broth, or vegetable broth.
This salty umami flavor elevates all kinds of recipes and it pairs beautifully with this spicy queso dip. I love using this because it's one ingredient that packs a punch so it allows this recipe to have loads of flavor without pulling out every single spice jar in your cabinet! Plus, it adds even more protein to this dip!
Similar to other favorite bone broth recipes like Homemade Caramel Sauce with Bone Broth, Homemade BBQ Sauce with Bone Broth, Organic Meatloaf With Bone Broth, and Bone Broth Hot Cocoa, the bone broth doesn't overpower, but just enhances the flavor of this dip while adding protein.
Ingredients

- Bone Broth: I use Kettle & Fire Beef Bone Broth, you can also use chicken if you prefer. Use code MIMIBAKESCOOKIES for 20% off your oder at Kettle & Fire!
- Buttermilk: I'm using organic buttermilk in this recipe for a nice tang and creaminess. You can use store bought buttermilk, or if you can't find it then you can easily make your own with my Organic Buttermilk Recipe.
- Cornstarch: I use organic cornstarch to thicken this dip.
- Jalapeños: I just use organic Jalapeños from a jar in this recipe. But, you can also use fresh if you prefer.

Easy Substitutions
- If you don't have bone broth, use chicken or vegetable stock. This will still bring flavor, but just not the added protein of bone broth.
- If you don't want to use cornstarch, use tapioca, potato, or arrowroot starch in its place.
- If you don't have Mexican cheese, you can feel free to substitute half a white cheese like white cheddar or Jack and then half yellow cheese like American or cheddar. This will give you a similar flavor. And I've tested this with American and white cheddar before, it's still so good!
- Adjust the jalapeños if you want it less or more spicy. You can even use tamed jalapeños for the flavor but not so much spice if you can't handle the heat! Tamed jalapeños have been bread to have flavor but not nearly as much spice!
How to Make Bone Broth Queso Dip

- In a medium pot, add the bone broth, buttermilk, cornstarch, garlic powder, salt, and pepper and whisk together until completely combined. Bring to a boil and then once boiling for 1 minute, reduce heat to a simmer and simmer for about 5 minutes.

- Turn the heat to medium, and slowly add in sour cream and whisk to combine completely.

- Add the cheese slowly while whisking to melt completely.

- Stir in the jalapeños until completely combined.

- Then it's ready to serve!
How to Serve

Bone Broth Queso Dip FAQ’s
If you have a corn allergy, you can use potato, arrowroot, or tapioca starch in place of cornstarch. You could also try Irish moss powder, though I have not tested that, but it is very similar.
You can easily make your own buttermilk with my Organic Buttermilk Recipe that only requires milk and a lemon! You can also substitute this with regular milk, but the flavor won’t be the same.
Store in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 1 week. You can reheat in a pot over the stovetop or in the microwave to warm it up!
