Why You'll Love This Recipe
- Homemade: When you make your own homemade taco seasoning, you can control what goes inside. While some store bought versions may contain seed oils, soy, or other stabilizers, when you make your own, you can omit all these things. This makes homemade taco seasoning so much healthier.
- Organic Ingredients: This is the best organic taco seasoning and it's easy to make at home with your favorite organic spices.
- Easy: This homemade taco seasoning recipe is incredibly easy! Just mix everything in a bowl together and transfer to a spice jar. Then it's ready to use in recipes.
- Use on Everything: You can use this on any kind of meat. We've used this on pork, chicken, steak, and fish and it works with them all.
Ingredients

- Garlic Powder: Savory, garlicky backbone that reads instantly “taco.” Because it’s dehydrated and finely ground, it disperses evenly, clings to meat and veggies, and won’t scorch as easily as fresh garlic. Adds umami and a little bite.
- Onion Powder: Sweet-savory depth that smooths out sharper flavors (like cumin and cayenne) and helps the blend taste “finished.”
- Cayenne: Clean, direct heat, organic cayenne is what gives this homemade taco seasoning a kick! If you want it more spicy, you can add more cayenne to your liking, but start small (1/4 teaspoon at a time).
- Cumin: The signature warm, earthy note of classic taco flavor. A tiny bit smoky with a citrusy edge; it ties everything together and makes the kitchen smell like taco night!

Mild vs Spicy Taco Seasoning (Optional)
- Mild: Make the seasoning as written for a classic, family-friendly taco flavor.
- Medium: Add extra ¼ teaspoon cayenne pepper or chili powder for a little kick.
- Spicy: Add extra ½ teaspoon cayenne pepper (or more to taste) for bold heat.
Tip: You can always start mild and add heat while cooking — once it’s spicy, there’s no going back!

Recipe FAQ's
The best way to store this is in a spice jar in your pantry.
Ground spices will last a while, about 2 years. But as with everything, they can loose their luster, so it's best to make an amount you'll use within 6 months to a year.
Brands can vary and store bought taco seasoning packets can be anywhere from 1 to 3 tablespoons. I recommend using 1 to 2 tablespoons per pound of meat, depending on how bold you like the flavor. This recipe makes 9 tablespoons, so you'll have extra to store in your pantry for the next time you need it!
