Why These Homemade Carrot Pupcakes Are The Best Dog Cupcakes

  • Dog & People Friendly: These homemade Carrot Pupcakes are made using dog friendly ingredients. While you can also eat these too, your dog will think they are much tastier than you would! If you want matching human cupcakes, try my Brown Sugar Carrot Cupcakes With Cream Cheese Frosting for you!
  • One Bowl: These dog cupcakes mix up easily in one bowl, no fancy equipment is needed. You’ll just need a mixing bowl and whisk (or spatula).
  • Simple Ingredients: This recipe for dog cupcakes is easy to make with simple ingredients you probably already have. Your dog can even help you in the kitchen mix up the batter. They’ll definitely want to help with frosting too!
  • Treats or Food Topper: While these are fun homemade pupcakes to make for a dog birthday party, they are also great as homemade dog treats for anytime. If you have a picky eater, you can also use these as a food topper too! If you want more treat or food topper ideas, check out Healthy Dog Muffins, Waffle Recipe for Dogs, or Pumpkin Peanut Butter Dog Cookies too.
  • Pupcakes Without Peanut Butter: While many dog cupcakes are peanut butter based, these are carrot based! So, if you don't want to do peanut butter you can easily make these using the Greek yogurt frosting option (and no peanut butter!).

Ingredients

individual ingredients for homemade pupcakes laid out against a white background.
  • Carrots: Carrots are the base of these homemade carrot pupcakes. These are basically carrot dog cupcakes!
  • Eggs: Organic eggs help these dog cupcakes rise and bind together when they bake.
  • Greek Yogurt: I top these pupcakes with plain Greek yogurt, which makes the best “frosting” for these dog cupcakes. John John goes nuts for yogurt. Just be sure you are using organic plain Greek yogurt without any sugars or flavors. This makes a great frosting option for pupcakes without peanut butter!
  • Peanut Butter: If you don’t have plain Greek yogurt you can also top these pupcakes with organic creamy peanut butter. Or you can do a mix of both! Both of these are a great dog friendly frosting option! If you are doing peanut butter frosting, make sure it's creamy peanut butter, natural peanut butter and only has 2 ingredients, peanuts and salt. Avoid all other ingredients like added sugars, flavors, seed oils and especially xylitol as this is incredibly toxic to dogs. You can even mix the peanut butter into the Greek yogurt for a peanut butter yogurt frosting!
  • Freeze Dried Strawberries: I top these with organic freeze dried strawberries, but you can also use fresh strawberries as long as you remove the stems.

Baker’s Tips

  • Be sure to use a fine grater to grate the carrots. I use the smallest option on my box grater. This will ensure the texture is right. Don't use shredded carrots from a bag as these can be too thick and then create a gummy texture in the cupcakes..
  • You can use coconut oil in place of olive oil if you prefer.
  • Frosting is optional, if you want to leave off the yogurt or peanut butter you can.
  • You can top these with other dog safe toppings such as fresh blueberries, blackberries, or a drizzle of honey.
  • Make them mini just by using a mini muffin tin instead. You'll want to bake a few minutes less.

Recipe FAQ’s

Are cupcakes safe for dogs?

Traditional human cupcakes contain sugar, dairy, and sometimes seed oils. These are harmful ingredients to dogs so dogs cannot have regular human cupcakes. But, if you bake dog safe cupcakes with dog friendly ingredients, like this recipe, then yes dogs can have these cupcakes!

What makes these pupcakes dog-friendly?

These use dog-friendly ingredients, which make them safe for dogs.

Is peanut butter safe for dogs?

Yes, as long as it is natural peanut butter made with only 2 ingredients, peanuts and salt. Dogs don't need any other ingredients that can be some peanut butters such as sugars, natural flavors, artificial flavors, seed oils, and especially xylitol as this is a toxic ingredient for dogs. Also, make sure you're only using creamy peanut butter as dogs cannot digest whole nuts well, so don't use chunky.

Is Greek yogurt safe for dogs?

Yes, plain Greek yogurt is safe for most dogs. Be sure it is plain, with no added sugars, flavors or anything else. Greek yogurt is high in protein and has probiotics. While dogs don't really need dairy, there's not much dairy in Greek yogurt as the straining process removes liquid whey, which reduces lactose to about half what regular yogurt has. Because of the live cultures, dogs can easily digest this. But, all dogs are different and if your dog is sensitive to this, then don't give it to them. You can top the pupcakes with peanut butter instead or leave them plain.

What frosting is safe for dog cupcakes?

Plain Greek yogurt and creamy peanut butter are great frosting options for your dog cupcakes!

Do I need to frost dog cupcakes?

No, you can skip frosting these if you don’t want to frost them. Your dog will still enjoy them!

Can I eat these dog cupcakes?

Yes! You can eat these cupcakes too, though they won’t be very sweet. Try my Brown Sugar Carrot Cupcakes With Cream Cheese Frosting for matching human cupcakes.

How many pupcakes can I give my dog?

These are a treat, so they should be fed in moderation. These are regular sized cupcakes, so I recommend cutting them in half or quarters, depending on the size of your dog.

Can I make these mini carrot pupcakes?

Yes, just use a mini cupcake pan instead. You’ll also need to bake them for less time, start with 15 minutes and go from there.

Can I make these for a dog birthday party?

Yes, these are a perfect dessert for a dog party!

Can I make these into a dog cake instead?

Yes, if you want to make this into a dog carrot cake you can add the batter into an 8-inch cake pan. You may need to bake for a few minutes longer, so make sure to check to ensure the cake is done.

How should I store these?

Store leftovers in an airtight container in the fridge because they have Greek yogurt frosting. If you just frosted them with peanut butter, they do not need to be in the refrigerator, they can just be stored at room temperature for up to 3 days.

Can I freeze frosted pupcakes?

I recommend freezing them without the frosting as it will be better. You can then frost them after they thaw.
