Ingredients

individual ingredients for avocado lettuce wrap burgers laid out against a white background.
  • Ground Beef: I use organic 85/15 ground beef. But, you can also use a leaner option like 90/10 or a richer option like 80/20.
  • Lettuce: I use organic Romaine lettuce leaves. You can also use Iceberg lettuce leaves too. Both of these kinds of lettuce have a nice crisp texture, so they work great for a bun. While Butter lettuce would also work, it's much softer, so it's up to you which you prefer.
  • Avocado: I use organic avocado slices. The creaminess of the avocado makes these delicious burgers without cheese. It's best to use larger size avocados so the slices fill the whole burger, but small ones are fine too, you may just need more than if using large avocados.
  • Cheese: I don't usually make these with cheese, but my husband always puts cheese on his. He loves classic American (we use Organic Valley!). You can use any kind of cheese you like, or leave it off like I do.

Tips

  • You can use any kind of ground beef, 90/10 for a leaner option or 80/20 if you want a higher fat content, any of these work.
  • You can use ground turkey, ground chicken, ground lamb or even a mix of different ground meats too.
  • If you want to add a bun, you can do that too! Try it with Organic Brioche Buns With Instant Yeast, Sourdough Pretzel Buns, or you can even make these into small sliders on Honey Butter Dinner Rolls.
  • Feel free to use your favorite burger toppings like grilled onions, ketchup, BBQ sauce or spread too.
  • If you have extras or you're meal prepping, be sure to store cooked burgers and chopped veggies in separate airtight containers in the fridge. I recommend only cutting avocado before serving so it doesn't brown.

  1. Cook for about 4 minutes per side, flip and cook again on the second side. I like to cook my burgers to medium rare but cook to your liking. Remove from heat. If adding cheese slices, do so now, and allow to melt (trick is to cover with a lid here).

Recipe FAQ's

What type of lettuce is best for lettuce wrap burgers?

I like to use Romaine lettuce. But Iceberg and Butter lettuce also work too. Iceberg will give you a little crispier option and Butter lettuce will be a little softer.

Can I add a bun?

Absolutely! Feel free to add a bun to these if you prefer. I make them both ways, just depends on how I'm feeling. Try my Soft White Hamburger Buns for a healthy homemade bun.

What toppings go well with avocado lettuce wrap burgers?

Feel free to add any other burger toppings you want like grilled onions, BBQ sauce, bacon, or more.

Can I use ground turkey or chicken instead of beef?

Absolutely, you can use any kind of ground meat you like or even a mix.

How do you keep lettuce wrap burgers from falling apart?

Use a firmer lettuce, like Romaine or Iceberg. You should also use 2 to 3 leaves as this will help be more bun-like. You can also wrap it parchment paper for eating, like I do here!

How do you cut lettuce for burger wraps?

I just trim off the stems of the iceberg and cut the leaves in half. Then, you can use a couple leaves to get a thick lettuce wrap bun that consists of both the crunchier part and the more green, a little softer part.

How do you keep avocado from browning in burgers?

The trick is to cut the avocado right before you plan to serve your burgers. I don't see any need to cut these before, as then you can just assemble and eat. But, if you're setting out a burger bar, you may want to have avocado sitting out longer. In this case, then I recommend brushing the avocado slices with lemon juice.

Are lettuce wrap burgers healthy or low carb?

They are low-carb as there is no bread! I load these with veggies so they are healthier than a plain burger with a bun too!

Can I make lettuce wrap burgers ahead of time?

I don't like making these ahead of time, but if you want to meal prep then I recommend making the burgers and storing in an airtight container separately from everything else. Then, you can slices the veggies and keep those separate as well. I would recommend cutting avocado when you're ready to assemble everything.

How do you store and reheat leftover burgers?

Store burgers in an airtight container alone. Then, keep the slices veggies in another container. I recommend only cutting avocado for what you'll eat in the moment, as it's better to store half an avocado in an airtight container than sliced avocado as it will begin to brown. Keep everything in the fridge and you can reheat burgers in the microwave or even in a warm skillet. Then, assemble and they are ready to enjoy again.
