I cannot always buy organic hamburger buns here. This has been one of my greatest challenges when grocery shopping in our small town. And, while I eat burgers on sourdough all the time, they are just better on buns!

So, I have been trying to make a light, fluffy, and chewy hamburger bun for a while now as I have been eating burgers on sourdough bread instead! And I have been craving real organic hamburger buns! And, I finally got a recipe i like. This recipe for soft white hamburger buns produces a soft, light, fluffy, and chewy white hamburger bun that doesn't break!

Why You'll Love This Recipe

Organic: It's really hard to find organic hamburger buns, but now you don't have to look anymore and you can bake your own!

No Seed Oils: Many hamburger buns (even organic ones) have seed oils, this recipe is free of seed oils.

Easy: I love this recipe because it's incredibly easy. This mixes up your stand mixer and it only rises for about 1 ½ hours.

Ingredients

  • Yeast: I use organic instant yeast.
  • Cane Sugar: You'll need a little organic cane sugar to activate the yeast.
  • Bread Flour: I use King Arthur Organic Bread Flour in these organic hamburger buns.
  • EVOO: I use organic extra virgin olive oil, no seed oils here!
  • Salt: Use fine sea salt.
  • Sesame Seeds: I top these organic hamburger buns with sesame seeds, but you could also leave them plain or do poppy seeds.

Tools Needed

  • Scale: Always use a digital food scale for the best results
  • Stand Mixer: I use my stand mixer for ease, but you can also make this with a mixing bowl and your hands if you want to give it some extra elbow grease.
  • Baking Sheet: I bake these organic hamburger buns on a half sheet pan.
  • Parchment Paper: I always use nontoxic parchment paper to prevent the buns from sticking to the baking sheet.

Step by Step Instructions

Step 1

In the bowl of a stand mixer fitted with the dough hook, add the yeast ½ cup warm water, and 1 teaspoon cane sugar. Let sit for 5 minutes or until bubbly.

Step 2

Add the bread flour, avocado oil, cane sugar, sea salt, and 1 cup warm water. Knead on speed 2 to 4 for 5 minutes, the dough will be smooth. Cover with a kitchen towel or plastic wrap and let rise for 1 hour or until doubled in size.

Step 3

Line a baking sheet with parchment paper. Form into 8 pieces, weighing about 3.6 ounces each. Form each piece into a round ball by tucking the dough under itself so the top is smooth. Place on the prepared baking sheet. Cover with plastic wrap and let rise for 30 minutes or until the dough feels springy.

Step 4

Preheat the oven to 425°F. Sprinkle sesame seeds on top (optional). Bake for 10 to 12 minutes or until lightly browned on the tops. (If you're baking at high altitude, be sure to check the Notes at the bottom of the recipe for high altitude baking instructions).

Variations

  • Plain: Leave off the sesame seeds.
  • Poppy Seed: Replace the sesame seeds with poppy seeds.
  • Seeded: Add Everything bagel spice mixed with pumpkin seeds in place of the sesame seeds.
