French toast is my favorite of the breakfast items eaten with syrup (in that category are also waffles and pancakes). I really love French toast the most because it's the easiest and fastest to make and I love the texture. These french toast sticks are made using hot dog buns, making them a perfect weekend brunch recipe for when you have leftover buns from a barbecue or party!

I use my Sourdough Hot Dog Buns to create sourdough French toast! You could also make this recipe with traditional sourdough bread as well, but the hot dog buns are a little fluffier and denser than sourdough bread, which is why they lend really well to this organic French toast recipe!

Nostalgic Brunch: You can't have brunch without French toast, in my opinion. If you are hosting a brunch for many people and you have other items, then these Sourdough French Toast Sticks are a perfect option as they are small. So, people can get some of everything!

Ingredients

  • Sourdough Hot Dog Buns: I use my Sourdough Hot Dog Buns, but any hot dog buns or even sourdough bread work just fine.
  • Eggs: Use large eggs.
  • Heavy Whipping Cream: I use Organic Valley Heavy Whipping Cream, you can use your favorite. This adds a richness to this organic French toast as opposed to just using milk.
  • Cinnamon: I use organic Korintje cinnamon, which is my favorite variety. Check out my post the Best Cinnamon to Bake With for more info on different cinnamon varieties.
  • Nutmeg: This adds depth of flavor.
  • Butter: I use Organic Valley Salted Butter, you can use your favorite.
  • Maple Syrup: Use pure organic maple syrup for the best flavor.

Tools Needed

  • Shallow Baking Dish: You'll need a shallow baking dish, like the Staub to easily soak the French toast sticks in.
  • Cast Iron Skillet: I use my 10-inch cast iron skillet, but any large skillet will work.

Step by Step Instructions

Step 1

Trim off ends of hot dog buns, so they are even. Cut each hot dog bun into 4 sticks.

Step 2

In a shallow dish, add the eggs, cream, cinnamon, and nutmeg and whisk together. Soak the bread sticks in the mixture while you prepare the pan or griddle.

Step 3

In a large skillet or griddle, our over medium/high heat and add the butter to coat the pan. Add the soaked bread and cook for about 1 to 2 minutes per side until golden brown, rotating each side to ensure even cooking.

Serve with maple syrup and fresh fruit.

Tips

  • Trim off the ends of the hot dog buns, this creates even sticks.
  • Use a shallow baking dish, like a 9 x 9-inch baking pan or even a 9 x 13-inch baking pan. This allows you to soak more sticks at one time. I soaked sticks, then put them in the skillet, and then soaked more while those were cooking.
  • You can freeze extra French Toast Sticks and then just heat them up in your air fryer or toaster oven. We do this as this makes a lot, and we won’t eat them all the same day. This way, we can just pull them out of the freezer when we’re craving French toast.
  • I like to serve these with maple syrup and fresh fruit. You can also serve with a dusting of powdered sugar, Homemade Lemon Curd, Caramel Sauce or Homemade Whipped Cream!

FAQ's

Can I use regular bread?

Yes, if you don't have hot dog buns on hand, you can just use any kind of bread and cut it into sticks. I would recommend using a thicker bread, like sourdough. Using a thin sandwich bread may not result in the best sticks as they may be too flimsy.

What can I serve these with?

These Sourdough French Toast Sticks are delicious all on their own! But, if you want to add more protein, you can make my Homemade Pork Breakfast Sausages, Maple Turkey Breakfast Sausages, or Fluffy Scrambled Eggs. You can also add fresh fruit or Homemade Whipped Cream.
