French toast is my favorite of the breakfast items eaten with syrup (in that category are also waffles and pancakes). I really love French toast the most because it's the easiest and fastest to make and I love the texture. These french toast sticks are made using hot dog buns, making them a perfect weekend brunch recipe for when you have leftover buns from a barbecue or party!
I use my Sourdough Hot Dog Buns to create sourdough French toast! You could also make this recipe with traditional sourdough bread as well, but the hot dog buns are a little fluffier and denser than sourdough bread, which is why they lend really well to this organic French toast recipe!

- Nutmeg: This adds depth of flavor.
- Butter: I use Organic Valley Salted Butter, you can use your favorite.
- Maple Syrup: Use pure organic maple syrup for the best flavor.

- Shallow Baking Dish: You'll need a shallow baking dish, like the Staub to easily soak the French toast sticks in.
- Cast Iron Skillet: I use my 10-inch cast iron skillet, but any large skillet will work.

Step 3

Tips
- Trim off the ends of the hot dog buns, this creates even sticks.
- Use a shallow baking dish, like a 9 x 9-inch baking pan or even a 9 x 13-inch baking pan. This allows you to soak more sticks at one time. I soaked sticks, then put them in the skillet, and then soaked more while those were cooking.
- You can freeze extra French Toast Sticks and then just heat them up in your air fryer or toaster oven. We do this as this makes a lot, and we won’t eat them all the same day. This way, we can just pull them out of the freezer when we’re craving French toast.
- I like to serve these with maple syrup and fresh fruit. You can also serve with a dusting of powdered sugar, Homemade Lemon Curd, Caramel Sauce or Homemade Whipped Cream!

FAQ's
Yes, if you don't have hot dog buns on hand, you can just use any kind of bread and cut it into sticks. I would recommend using a thicker bread, like sourdough. Using a thin sandwich bread may not result in the best sticks as they may be too flimsy.
These Sourdough French Toast Sticks are delicious all on their own! But, if you want to add more protein, you can make my Homemade Pork Breakfast Sausages, Maple Turkey Breakfast Sausages, or Fluffy Scrambled Eggs. You can also add fresh fruit or Homemade Whipped Cream.
