Equipment

  • Baking Dish
  • Cast Iron Skillet

Ingredients

  • 6 sourdough hot dog buns
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 cup heavy whipping cream
  • ½ teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • ¼ teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 2 tablespoons salted butter (softened)
  • maple syrup (for serving)

Instructions

  • Trim off ends of hot dog buns, so they are even. Cut each hot dog bun into 4 sticks. (Or, slice your bread slices into thick sticks).
  • In a shallow dish, add the eggs, cream, cinnamon, and nutmeg and whisk together.
  • Soak the bread sticks in the mixture while you prepare the pan or griddle.
  • In a large skillet or griddle, our over medium/high heat and add the butter to coat the pan.
  • Add the soaked bread and cook for about 1 to 2 minutes per side until golden brown, rotating each side to ensure even cooking.
  • Remove from the pan and continue with the rest of the sticks until everything is cooked.
  • Serve with maple syrup and fresh fruit.

Notes

Tips
  • Trim off the ends of the hot dog buns, this creates even sticks.
  • If you don't have heavy cream, you can use whole milk. But, the cream really gives these a richer flavor that pairs really well with the tangy sourdough.
  • Use a shallow baking dish, like a 9 x 9-inch baking pan or even a 9 x 13-inch baking pan. This allows you to soak more sticks at one time. I soaked sticks, then put them in the skillet, and then soaked more while those were cooking. I use my Our Place baking dish which works great!
  • You can freeze extra French Toast Sticks and then just heat them up in your air fryer or toaster oven. We do this as this makes a lot, and we won’t eat them all the same day. This way, we can just pull them out of the freezer when we’re craving French toast.
