We made our Avocado Lettuce Wrap Burgers last week and I thought I needed to make a dog friendly burger recipe so John John could also enjoy burgers this summer! While a traditional burger with a bun is not ideal for dogs, this Dog Burger Bowl is a great way to let your dog enjoy a burger!
This is basically just homemade beef dog food that your pup will love! I use organic grassfed ground beef. This is the same beef that we buy for ourselves when we make burgers, making shopping simple!
I use my Dog Friendly Sweet Potato Fries for the carb in this recipe in place of a bun. I top this burger with spinach and orange pepper (because it’s the color of cheese!). Your dog is going to love this homemade dog food recipe! But, if you want to make this more of a regular meal, check out How to Cook Sweet Potatoes for Dogs for sweet potatoes that are plain, which is better for every day feeding.

Ingredients

- Sweet Potato: Dog Friendly Sweet Potato Fries make the perfect carb for this dog burger bowl!
- Ground Beef: Organic grassfed ground beef is a great choice for your pup as a treat meal. We buy the same ground beef for John John that we do for us. Though, we only give this to him once in a while as beef is not as lean and he tends to do better with lean meat for everyday eating.
- Spinach: I use just a little bit of spinach here, dog's don't need a lot. It's also best if it's lightly cooked. I find that the hot burger can warm it up just enough. If you are feeding leftovers, you can boil or steam spinach before adding it into your dog's bowl. I don't recommend doing spinach every day, but a few times a week is fine.
- Bell Pepper: I use organic orange bell pepper (because it’s the color of cheese!). But, you can use any color as they are all safe for dogs.

Tips for Sharing Food
- If you are making burgers for yourself, you can just set aside a small amount of ground beef for your dog!

- Dog Friendly Sweet Potato Fries are also insanely delicious and human friendly, so enjoy them as a side for you too!
- If you want to make a Dog Burger Bowl with ground chicken or ground turkey, you can do that as well. Set aside a small amount of ground turkey when making my Organic Turkey Burgers with Grilled Onions for you!
- You can add in other dog safe veggies like carrots or broccoli.
- If you want to add in grains, feel free to use white rice. I don't recommend brown rice or wild rice as dog's can digest it as well.
How to Make a Dog Burger Bowl

- To make the fries, follow my recipe for Dog Friendly Sweet Potato Fries. Make sure the fires are made ahead of time before starting the burgers.

- To make the burgers: Form the ground beef into 8 patties. You can make them larger if you have a larger dog, but I find it difficult to make them much smaller than 8. Even if you have a smaller dog, you can cut in half if need be.

- Heat a large skillet over medium/high heat. Once it’s warm, add in the burgers. Cook for about 2 to 3 minutes per side, then flip and continue cooking until done.

- Dice the desired amount of orange pepper you need for your dog.

- To assemble the burger bowl: Add the fries, burger, spinach leaves, and orange pepper. Chop everything up into small pieces so your dog can easily eat it. Serve immediately.
Storage Tips
If you are making this as homemade beef dog food, you can chop everything up and mix it together if you would like. You can also store beef, fries, and veggies separately as well. We do this, as I prefer to choose the amounts of each for John John's meals as I think it's easier to ensure he's getting the right amount of each (plus I eat the fries!).
Dog Burger Bowl FAQ’s
If you just want to make this as a one time meal for your dog, you don't need to add anything else. But, if you feed your dog only human food and homemade food daily, you need to ensure you are adding in bone powder for the correct ratio of calcium to phosphorus. We use the Four Leaf Rover Better Bones Powder.
Yes, you can use ground turkey, ground chicken, or even ground lamb. These are all great options for dogs too!

Yes, Russet potatoes are fine for dogs, but sweet potatoes are healthier, just like for us. Just be sure to peel the Russet potato skins too as dog's should eat potato skins because it can cause GI upset.
No, dog's do not need cheese so I would not add this in.
I use this as it looks like cheese, but it's not! Bell peppers are a great healthy vegetable for dogs, making this look like cheese, but without dairy.
Yes, that also works. You can lightly steam the spinach if it's frozen.
You can add carrots, broccoli, zucchini, celery, or even a little steamed kale.
Yes, always chop all the ingredients into small pieces so your dog won't choke. This also helps them to easily digest the meal, especially if they wolf it down because they are so excited!
This really depends on your dog’s size. I have an article with all the info read How Much Homemade Dog Food Should I Feed My Dog?
