Tips for How to Cook Rice for Dogs
- Use organic Jasmine rice. Brown rice and wild rice are safe for dogs but they can be more difficult on their stomach to digest.
- Be sure to introduce new foods to your pup slowly.
- I like to wash the rice as it helps remove some of the starches. This will also make it easier for your dog to digest as well.
- You can use water or dog safe bone broth to cook the rice. I like to use water as you can also just add some bone broth into your dog’s food with the rice too.
- If you’re using bone broth, I recommend Small Batch Pets.
- I'm cooking this rice in a pot, as that's usually how we make rice. But if you prefer to use a ricer cooker, that also works too!
- Remember to keep rice free of any seasoning or fats and remember that garlic and onion are toxic to your dog.
- Store extra rice in an airtight container in the fridge for a week. You can also share rice with your dog, this way nothing goes to waste! This is what we do as we don’t give John John rice very often.
- You can also freeze extra rice in an airtight container for up to 3 months.

Recipe FAQ’s
Organic Jasmine rice is the best option for dogs, especially if you’re cooking rice for your dog with an upset stomach. Both brown rice and wild rice are safe for dogs but they have more fiber so they can be more difficult to digest.
Cook with water (or dog safe bone broth) over the stovetop or in a rice cooker. Be sure to cook completely, as uncooked rice won’t be easy to digest.
Yes, you need to cook rice plain without added fats or seasonings. I like to cook it with water, but you can also use dog safe bone broth if you prefer.
Organic Jasmine rice is best for dogs as it’s easy to digest. Brown rice has more fiber so it can be more difficult on your dog’s stomach.
They can if it’s part of a balanced meal. But, rice isn’t my favorite carb for dogs as it doesn’t provide a whole lot of nutritional value compared to other options. It’s great for a bland meal if your dog needs something gentle on their stomach. And it’s also a great addition if you have a larger dog that does a lot of activity and needs more calories. It’s also fine for some meals for variety, but I don’t recommend this as the only carb you give your dog if cooking homemade. Try How to Cook Sweet Potatoes for Dogs for a great daily carb option.
Rice is a carbohydrate, so this should only make up about 10% of your dog’s daily diet. Depending on your dog’s activity level, weight and size this can vary slightly. Yes, they can!
You can, but dogs don’t need extra carbs. So, adding rice to dog food won’t really benefit your dog much. This is best served as part of a meal, not in addition.
Same as cooked rice for you, about a week in the refrigerator. If you want to freeze cooked rice, you can also do that too. Store in a freezer safe container for up to 3 months. Thaw and it’s ready.
