What is magic shell?
Magic shell is a combination of chocolate and oil that is a liquid sauce that you pour over ice cream. When it hits the ice cream, it “magically” hardens completely. This creates a chocolate ice cream topping that coats your ice cream. It makes it taste like you're eating a chocolate dipped ice cream bar!
Most store bought magic shells contain seed oils, stabilizers, and preservatives. But, you can easily make your own homemade magic shell with just two simple ingredients! This Organic Magic Shell is so easy and so good, you'll never want to buy it again!
How does magic shell work?
Homemade magic shell is made up of dark chocolate and coconut oil. Because coconut oil solidifies when cold, when the magic shell hits the cold ice cream it hardens. This creates a chocolate shell around the ice cream.
Ingredients

- Dark Chocolate: I use organic dark chocolate. I love using organic mini dark chocolate chips because they melt so easily and you don't have to chop chocolate. If you use a dark chocolate bar, just be sure to chop it up so it melts easily.
- Coconut Oil: I use organic coconut oil. This helps the magic shell harden as soon as it hits cold ice cream.

Flavor Variations
You can use milk chocolate or white chocolate in place of dark chocolate if you prefer. And, you can easily make different flavor variations of this homemade magic shell! As soon as the chocolate and coconut oil are melted together, just add in the additional flavorings to create mint magic shell, peanut butter magic shell and more!
- Vanilla: Add 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract for a richer flavor.
- Mint: Add 1 teaspoon of peppermint extract.
- Almond: Add 1 teaspoon of almond extract.
- Peanut Butter: Add 28 grams peanut butter.
- Almond Butter: Add 28 grams almond butter.
- Orange: Add 1 teaspoon of orange extract.
- Lemon: Add 1 teaspoon of lemon extract.
- Salted: Add a pinch of salt to your liking! I love salted chocolate, so I love this!
Baker's Tips
- Use a high quality dark chocolate for the best flavor!
- Because coconut oil will harden, the magic shell with harden when stored. Just microwave it for a few seconds to warm it up before using.
- I like to store this in a mason jar as it's easy to reheat if needed and pour over ice cream.
How to Make Organic Magic Shell With Coconut Oil

- In a heatproof bowl, add the chocolate and coconut oil.

- You can melt over a double boiler. Or, alternatively, microwave for 30 second intervals, stirring in between each interval to prevent burning. Stir to combine completely.

- Pour over ice cream and enjoy!
How to Store & Use
I store this homemade magic shell in an airtight container or glass jar in the fridge. I usually use a mason jar. When I'm ready to enjoy leftovers, I just pop it in the microwave for a 30 seconds until it's liquid again. Then you can pour this ice cream topping over your cool treat and enjoy!
Use this on your favorite ice cream or frozen yogurt! Try it on Raspberry Chocolate Chip Ice Cream Without Eggs, Cookies and Cream Coffee Ice Cream, Organic Rocky Road Ice Cream, or Salted Caramel No Churn Ice Cream. Enjoy it on frozen yogurt like Homemade Mint Chocolate Chip Fro Yo or Healthy Homemade Cherry Frozen Yogurt.
You can even use this to half dip ice cream sandwiches like Olive Oil Brownie Ice Cream Sandwiches and Sourdough Chocolate Chip Cookie Ice Cream Sandwiches. And you can fully dip popsicles or ice cream bars like Orange Creamsicle Popsicles!
And you can also use this as a sauce on top of fresh fruit like strawberries, bananas, kiwis, or raspberries. It's also the perfect chocolate sauce to dip or coat ice cream cones in. You can fill the cone with it, then add in your ice cream!
Organic Magic Shell With Coconut Oil FAQ's
Yes, if you want to use milk chocolate in place of dark, you can definitely do that! You can use a chocolate bar or chocolate chips, whichever you prefer. If you are using a chocolate bar, be sure to chop the chocolate into small pieces so it melts easily. You can even use white chocolate if you prefer.
No, because coconut oil solidifies, this is what makes magic shell work! So, you cannot use avocado oil, sunflower oil, or canola oil as these do not harden. So, it won't work.
You can store in a glass jar in the pantry for up to 2 weeks. If you want to store longer, then store in the fridge and heat before use.
