Why You'll Love This Recipe
- Brown Butter: This recipe has the addition of brown butter. The simple method of browning the butter before adding into the recipe gives this a sweet and nutty flavor that unmatched!
- Use on Everything: You can use this dessert sauce on literally everything! Dip cookies and biscotti, add on top of waffles, pancakes, or French toast, or use in your coffee or hot chocolate. I personally love this on top of Buttermilk Pumpkin Waffles.
- Makes Great Gifts: This recipe is great for gifting! I use 6-ounce glass jars here, but you can use anywhere form 6 to 9 ounces and it would be a great little gift!
- Organic: This dessert sauce is made with organic ingredients. While store bought butterscotch sauce can have high fructose corn syrup, artificial colors, natural flavors, and more, this homemade version is made with only 5 organic ingredients!
Ingredients

- Light Brown Sugar: The base of butterscotch sauce is brown sugar. I use my Homemade Light Brown Sugar recipe, but store bought also works.
- Butter: I use organic salted butter, if you're using unsalted, just add 1/4 teaspoon more of salt at the end.
- Vanilla Extract: Be sure to use a high quality vanilla extract, not imitation. My favorite is Simply Organic Vanilla Extract.

How to Make Brown Butter Butterscotch Sauce

- To brown the butter: In a medium pot, add the butter. Cook over low/medium heat until the butter melts.

- Continue to cook until the butter tuns a golden color with small brown specs. Remove from heat immediately, as it can burn very easily at this stage.

- Add the light brown sugar into the pot with the brown butter. Put over low/medium heat and allow the sugar to dissolve.

- Once the sugar has dissolved completely, you’ll have a liquid that is kind of like a paste.

- Slowly add in the cream as you stir to combine completely.

- Allow to cook and simmer for an additional 2 to 3 minutes. Remove from heat.

- Add in the vanilla extract and sea salt and stir to combine completely.

- Add into jars for gifting or store in a glass jar in the fridge for up to 2 weeks.

Ways to Use Brown Butter Butterscotch Sauce
- Drizzle on top of Eggless Apple Cinnamon Waffles, Homemade Malted Milk Waffles, or Eggless Sourdough Waffles.
- Enjoy with Homemade Buttermilk Pancakes.
- Replace the caramel sauce with this in Caramel Hot Cocoa.
- Add into coffee for sweetener.
- Drizzle on top of cakes or cupcakes like Vanilla Buttermilk Sheet Cake with Vanilla Frosting, Brown Sugar Carrot Cupcakes With Cream Cheese Frosting, or Cookie Dough Layer Cake.
Things You Need for Gifts
I love giving this as a gift as it's so unexpected. While there are typical homemade gifts during the holidays like caramel sauce, jam and of course the DIY Christmas Cookie Box, this is much more unique! Plus, you can use it for so many holiday treats like waffles, pancakes, hot chocolate, coffee and more.
- Glass Jars: I use 6-ounce Glass Jars (like you see here). This is a great size for gifting!n
- Name Tags: If you are gifting, name tags are a great idea so the recipient knows what it is.
- Twine: I use twine for tying on the name tags.
- Ribbon: You'll need ribbon if you're giving as gifts.
