I created this healthy Sloppy Joe recipe for my friends at Organic Prairie using their organic ground beef! I love their organic ground beef because I know it comes from USA farmers that really care for their animals.
Sloppy Joe’s were always a meal I dreaded as a child. They were something I had when I was forced to go to camp or I was at a friend’s house for dinner. Each time, I had to politely eat enough to make it look liked I was full, all the while wishing they were anything else. So, I knew I wanted to make this recipe a bit different from the overly sauced slop I knew as a child.
I made these Healthy Sloppy Joe Bowls and they are so good! We have already made them twice this week! While you can serve this on a bun for a more traditional, but healthy Sloppy Joe recipe, I really like serving these in a bowl for a more nutritious option!
Why You’ll Love This Recipe
Nostalgic: If you’re a fan of Sloppy Joe’s then this recipe will be incredibly nostalgic!
Healthy: This is a healthier take on traditional Sloppy Joe’s because I’m serving them up with sweet potato fries, lettuce, and pickles! You can serve on a bun if you prefer. I also use coconut aminos in place of soy sauce, veggies, in the meat, and serving them bowl style makes these naturally gluten free.
Quick and Easy: This recipe is quick and easy, which makes dinner simple and delicious! Delaney loves this recipe so much. I’ve already made them twice this week!
Crowd Pleaser: If you have picky eaters, this is a great way to sneak in some veggies. You can also serve these two ways, making dinner healthy for parents and fun for kids.
Ingredients & Health Benefits
- Sweet Potato: I make fries with sweet potato, which is high in vitamin A. You could also use Russet potato if you prefer.
- Coconut Oil: I use organic coconut oil for the fries, you could also use olive oil if you prefer.
- Garlic Powder: I love using organic garlic powder on fries for flavor!
- Nutritional Yeast: Organic nutritional yeast has protein, B vitamins, fiber, and antioxidants. It also adds a cheesy flavor to fries!
- Ground Beef: I use Organic Prairie 85/15 Ground Beef. You could also use 90/10 if you want. Organic grassfed beef has more nutrients than conventional beef and it’s a good source of protein and iron.
- Bell Pepper: I use organic green bell pepper here, but you can use any color. Bell peppers are a good source of antioxidants and vitamin C.
- Onion: I use organic red onion here for sweetness. You could also use white or yellow if you prefer, but I really like the sweet notes of the red with the ground beef. Onions contain quercetin, a flavonoid antioxidant and anti-inflammatory.
- Butter: I use a little bit of butter for cooking the onion and pepper. You could also use olive oil if you prefer.
- Tomato Paste: I use organic tomato paste.
- Coconut Aminos: I add in organic coconut aminos for sweetness. You could also use soy sauce in its place, but coconut aminos is much better for you.
- Ketchup: I use organic ketchup.
- Mustard: I use organic spicy brown mustard.
- Salt and Pepper: For seasoning and flavor!
- Chili Powder: I use organic chili powder for flavor.
Tools Needed
- Large Skillet: I use my GreenPan Skillet for this recipe as it’s very big so it holds the veggies and beef.
- Cutting Board: You’ll need a cutting board to chop the veggies.
- Sharp Kinfe: And a sharp knife for cutting veggies!
- Mixing Bowls: I use two small bowls for the spices and sauce mixture.
