What Makes a Dutch Oven “Non-Toxic”?

When shopping for a non-toxic Dutch oven, here’s what actually matters:

  • No PTFE, PFOA, or PFAS (often found in nonstick coatings)
  • Enameled cast iron or ceramic-coated steel
  • Stable coatings that won’t break down at high heat
  • Simple materials that don’t leach into food

The Testing

This is a completely unbiased post so you can trust I’m sharing my top picks for the best Dutch oven that is also nontoxic and under $100! There are many reviews about the best Dutch oven that talk about the main brands, such as Staub and Le Creuset. And while I have a Staub and Le Cruset, they are not typically the most budget friendly.

So, I wanted to try out some of the other options out there incase you are looking for an inexpensive Dutch oven. Not everyone has $200 to $400 to spend on a Dutch oven and that is an average price point for a 4 to 6 Quart in the classics like Staub and Le Creuset . But, I'm here to tell you that you don't need to spend a lot to get a good Dutch oven for big reward in the kitchen!

Whether you’re baking sourdough bread, cooking soups, stews, or slow-braised meals, these are the best non-toxic Dutch ovens worth buying right now. You don’t need to spend a lot to get a high quality nontoxic Dutch oven. So, I’m sharing my top picks so you can invest in the right one for you and your cooking and baking goals, even if you are on a budget.

Best Value — Overmont 4.5 Qt Dutch Oven

green dutch oven on stovetop.

This is the best value, in my opinion. The Overmont Dutch Oven is 4.5 Qt (but they also make other sizes such as 5.5 Qt and 7 Qt). But, I feel the 4.5 Qt is a great average size to have for most kitchens. This Dutch oven is easy to clean and even after multiple uses, the beautiful green color I got is still in perfect condition.

Now, I have a 4 Qt Staub that is usually my go to, but honestly this one does the job just as well! If you are looking for a beautiful Dutch oven, with multiple color options, that works just like a Staub, then this is a great option that I highly recommend. If you bake sourdough bread often, this is also the ideal size for bread loaves (as you can see!). This is perfect for baking Lemon Rosemary Sourdough Bread.

While this has a light interior, which can stain over time and many uses, I have not experienced this yet. I mainly bake bread in this or soups and stews where I use a wooden spoon. Because I have mostly nontoxic ceramic cookware, I have wood and silicone utensils, not many metal ones. So, I have not experienced chips, cracks, or many scratches here.

  • Size: This is a 4.5 quart, which is a perfect size for baking breads and soups.
  • Nontoxic: They are PFOA-free, PTFE-free, and free from PFA chemicals. Made from 100% cast iron, they are coated with three layers of enamel both inside and outside.
  • Oven Safe: Up to 500°F.
  • Colors: I chose the bottle green, but this also comes in pastel pink, red, white, gray, pumpkin, sapphire blue.
  • Price: $44 on Amazon on sale (list price is $59)

Best Overall Pick — Ciwete 6 Qt Dutch Oven

mint green dutch oven on top of a stove.

This is my overall pick because it’s a 6 Qt Dutch oven, making this an ideal size for small or even larger families. The price point is the best for the size, in my opinion, because a 6 Qt Dutch oven is pretty large. Before this test, the largest Dutch oven I owned was my Kana Milo 5.5 Qt Dutch Oven and I never really thought I needed a larger size than that. But, we are a smaller family of just two (but I also cook a lot!).

This nontoxic Dutch oven is so beautiful in the mint green too! I have made Ham Bone Soup, Healthy Beef Soup With Leeks, and also John John's Turkey Dog Food Recipe in this Dutch oven. And, the mint green is a light color and still looks great with no stains! I will enjoy having a larger Dutch oven for when I want to make large batches of things.

  • Size: 6 Quart, which makes it the best value for the size in my opinion.
  • Nontoxic: PFOA, PTFA, cadmilim, and lead free.
  • Oven Safe: Up to 500°F.
  • Colors: I chose the mint green, but this also comes in pastel pink and cream which are all so beautiful. I honestly could not choose! But I already have multiple white/cream Dutch ovens so I wanted to choose something more fun!
  • Price: $59.99 on Amazon on sale (list price is $75)

Best USA Made Dutch Oven — Lodge 6 Qt Dutch Oven

cream dutch oven on a stovetop.

I love brands that keep their manufacturing in the USA. And Lodge is one of the great brands that has been making their cookware here. I have other pieces of Lodge cookware and I'm always happy with how they perform. I love this Lodge 6 Qt Dutch Oven as it’s such a great value!

It’s a larger size, it has so many amazing colors, the lid has a stainless-steel knob, and it’s also made in the USA. That’s saying a lot! Plus, Lodge is a trusted name brand as well. So if you wanted to get a Staub or Le Creuset and don’t have the budget, then a Lodge is another big name brand you will love. This works great for roasted chicken, soups, stews, vegetables, and more. This size is perfect for making a big batch of Yellow Curry Chicken With Bone Broth.

  • Size: 6 Quart, this is a great value size for larger families!
  • Nontoxic: Made without PFOA and PTFE.
  • Oven Safe: Up to 500°F.
  • Colors: So many colors from black, apricot, avocado, blue, brown, light blue, cranberry, sage, evergreen, green, indigo, red, lagoon, lilac, poppy, white, pumpkin, sandalwood, storm blue — you are sure to find one to match your kitchen aesthetic! The one I have here is the oyster white because I always choose lighter colors. And these all have a light cream interior enamel coating, not a dark interior incase you're wondering (even the black).
  • Price: $67 – $79 on Amazon (depending on color)

Best Biggest Dutch Oven — Martha Stewart Gatwick 7 Qt

white dutch oven on top of a stovetop.

If you are looking for a large inexpensive Dutch oven, then the Martha Stewart Gatwick 7 Qt Dutch Oven is the one you want. This thing is huge! So, if you have a larger family or like entertaining, this is my top pick. It also comes in so many colors that you can match your kitchen no matter what your style is. Of course Martha would want you to have options!

I don't know how often I'll use this Dutch oven because we have a smaller family of just two. But, this is great for cooking large things, such as my Savory Herb Mustard Ham, Apple Cider Honey Baked Ham, meal prepping soups, or making chili or stew if you're hosting a party.

I have the white here as I love lighter colors (as you can see!). Don't let the light interiors don't worry you as this Dutch oven cleans like a dream no matter what cooking techniques you're using. This cast-iron Dutch oven has been used to braise, sear, and make soups and it does it all wonderfully! Plus, I like the lighter interior as I think you can see what you're cooking better.

  • Size: 7 Quart, the biggest one you’d need!
  • Nontoxic: PFOA & PTFE free.
  • Oven Safe: Up to 500°F.
  • Colors: I chose the white in this, but it also comes in black, blue, gray, emerald, lavender, baby blue, navy, pink, red, linen, and yellow. So many colors to choose from so you can definitely match your kitchen!
  • Price: $73.99 on Amazon

Best Mini Dutch Oven — Kana Micro Dutch Oven

mac and cheese with veggies in a mini dutch oven on the countertop.

I am a huge fan of Kana as they make sustainable cookware. Not only that, but their products are just simply stylish. They are one of the brands I really love as they care about every single detail down to the box it's packaged in. Everything arrives like a present in a beautiful box, which also makes this a great gift idea for any foodie!

This mini or “micro” Dutch oven is the perfect single serve size. Use this for recipes like baked mac and cheese, apple crisp, baked pasta or for serving soup or stews that you need to warm up. You can even put this on the grill! It's also dishwasher safe, making it a super easy clean up. Kana also has a lifetime warranty on their Milo Dutch Ovens, which is a huge selling point.

  • Size: This is a .5 quart, which is a great size for single servings of soup, mac and cheese, or individual apple crisp or fruit cobbler!
  • Nontoxic: Made with 40% recycled cast iron, 304 stainless steel knob, and TOMATEC® enamel which is PFAS and PFTE free.
  • Oven Safe: Up to 500°F.
  • Colors: They just have white right now in this mini size, which is classic.
  • Price: $45.00 on Kana and you can use code MIMIBAKES for 10% off your order!

Best Dutch Oven Under $150

If you're willing to spend a little more, you can get a high quality name brand Dutch oven like Caraway, Kana, or Our Place. I love all of these Dutch ovens and use them all frequently. These are some of my top picks if you want to spend just a little bit more. Plus, if you can catch one of these bad boys (or girls) on sale, you could save more! I have discount codes below too!

Why We Expanded This Guide to Include Options Up to $150

Some popular budget Dutch ovens are no longer consistently available or no longer meet our standards for quality and longevity. Rather than recommending discontinued or lower-quality cookware, we expanded this guide to include slightly higher-priced options that offer noticeably better construction, coatings, and long-term value. These brands still fall within a reasonable budget but provide an upgrade in performance and design.

Best Eco Conscious Dutch Oven — Kana Milo 5.5 Qt

yellow curry chicken with bone broth in a white dutch oven on a marble countertop.

I love Kana as they make not just nontoxic cookware, but sustainable cookware too. Their Milo Dutch Oven, which comes in a 3.5 Qt or a 5.5 Qt, is made from 40% recycled cast-iron that would have gone to a land-fill. I love how eco friendly this is, using up waste! I have the 5.5 Qt. and I have had this for many years.

This Dutch oven is timeless, minimal design, and gorgeous. It has a stainless steel knob and beautiful colors are available! Their modern spray technique ensures a homogenous finish, eliminating the weak spots that can be found in cheaper alternatives.

This is usually my go to Dutch oven for when I want to sear or braise meat like when making Yellow Curry Chicken With Bone Broth or Hearty Meat Pie With Chuck Roast. This sears and braises beautifully with even heat distribution and you can crank it up high if needed. I have the white and it also cleans really well, I haven't had any stains, chips or anything yet!

  • Size: They make this in a 3.5 Qt and a 5.5 Qt so you can choose either size.
  • Nontoxic: Made with 40% recycled cast iron, 304 stainless steel knob, and TOMATEC® enamel which is PFAS and PFTE free.
  • Oven Safe: Up to 500°F.
  • Colors: There is white, black, dijon, navy, emerald, eucalyptus, dusty pink, pebble, terracotta
  • Price: $125 for the 3.5 Qt or $145 for the 5.5 Qt on Kana and you can use code MIMIBAKES for 10% off your order!

Best Lightweight Dutch Oven — Our Place Perfect Pot 5.5 Qt

our place perfect pot on a stovetop in the kitchen.

The Our Place Perfect Pot is an all in one pot that works just like a Dutch oven. It's my top pick for the best lightweight Dutch oven. This is easy to handle, I can pick it up with one hand easily (when nothing is in it) so that gives you an idea of how lightweight it is. So, if you want something that's easy to handle and clean, this is it.

This Dutch oven is oven safe up to 450°F so you can go from stovetop to oven as needed for most things. I wouldn't bake bread in this as it can't be hot enough to get a good crust with it only being able to go to 450°F, which is the only real downside.

It's great for making stews, soups, mac and cheese, Meyer Lemon Chicken Wild Rice Soup, or you can even use it like a slow cooker for recipes like Slow Cooker Beef Brisket Stew. This cleans like a dream, especially when making mac and cheese (with the ridiculous amount of cheese my husband adds in too), so I love that about it!

Plus, it can withstand high heat on the stovetop, so if you need to sear meat this works really well. It also has great heat distribution as it has an aluminum body for fast, even heat. This also comes with a wooden utensil, which no other Dutch oven includes, so that's a nice touch!

  • Size: This is a 5.5 Qt which is a great size
  • Nontoxic: Made without potentially toxic materials like PFAS (including PTFEs and PFOAs), lead and cadmium
  • Oven Safe: Up to 450°F.
  • Colors: They have steam (which is what I have), char, blue salt, sage, and spice
  • Price: $149 on Our Place

Best Ceramic-Coated Dutch Oven — Caraway 6.5 Qt

cream caraway dutch oven on a stovetop with flowers on the counter.

I have this 6.5 Qt Caraway Dutch Oven as part of their nontoxic cookware set. So, this is a bonus if you want to buy a new pan set, you can get a Dutch oven in the process. This Dutch oven has a nontoxic ceramic coating, just like their iconic pans.

This Dutch oven is like a hybrid pot/Dutch oven as it looks pretty like a pot, is lightweight like a pot, but you can use it like a Dutch oven. This is my go to for making popcorn like Pink Himalayan Sea Salt Popcorn, Brown Butter Pumpkin Spice Popcorn or Rosemary Sea Salt Popcorn. This is also my go to when I'm making large batches of Gingerbread Caramel Sauce for holiday gifts. It heats caramel really well, just like the smaller saucepan. And, it's also great for baking bread as it's oven safe up to 550°F, which is the highest temperature rating of all of these, so you can get a great crust.

This Dutch oven is made for low to medium cooking on the stovetop because it's made of nonstick ceramic. Caraway says roast, broil, simmer, and bake. So, this is best for things like popcorn, soups, or stews or baking bread as opposed to braising or searing over high heat on the stove. This Dutch oven also cleans like a dream, food slides right off so long as you aren't using techniques mentioned above with high heat!

This is also dishwasher safe, yet I have never put it in the dishwasher. I always just feel hand washing is best for Dutch ovens. But, this also has a lifetime warranty, which is awesome. So, hey, put it in the dishwasher if your heart desires!

  • Size: This is a 6.5 Qt Dutch Oven
  • Nontoxic: Made without PFAS, PTFE & PFOA, Plastics, Lead and Cadmium
  • Oven Safe: Up to 550°F.
  • Colors: They have cream (which is what I have), navy, gray, sage, perracotta, merigold, black and white
  • Price: This Dutch oven on its own is $165, but you can use code MIMIBAKES for 10% off your order on Caraway, making it just under $150!

The Takeaway

Sometimes you don’t need to spend a lot to get a big reward in the kitchen. The best Dutch oven for you doesn’t have to be a Staub dutch oven or even a Le Creuset Dutch oven. While these are classics and great options, don’t get caught up in the names. But, instead in what a Dutch oven can do. I’m here to tell you that you can cook, braise, and bake incredibly well in an budget friendly Dutch oven that is also nontoxic!

I was incredibly surprised by all the moxy these Dutch ovens have for being under $150! I haven't had a single chip since using any of these. And while many manufacturers say you can put enameled cast iron in the dishwasher, I never have, I always just hand wash. So, with proper care, these enameled dutch oven options work just like the pros. Now, go forth, cook, bake, and braise with confidence and more dollars in your savings account.
