How to Make Apple Cider Honey Baked Ham
I created this recipe for my friends at Organic Prairie to make holiday entertaining not only easy but insanely delicious. This Apple Cider Honey Baked Ham starts with heating the brown sugar, honey, apple cider, and maple syrup. Once everything is melted, I pour it over the ham, then cover with foil, and bake for about an hour.
When the ham is almost done, I remove the foil and add more of the delicious, sweet glaze on top and turn up the oven to brown the skin. Once your ham is done and it rests, it’s time to slice it up. That extra glaze in the bottom of your pan can be used to drizzle over the top for those guests that like a little extra sweetness (like me!). It's that easy!
Step by Step Instructions
Step 1
Make sure your Organic Prairie Ham is thawed. Preheat the oven to 350°F.
Step 2
Add the ham to a 5.5-quart Dutch oven or baking dish, cut side down.
Step 3
In a small pot, add the honey, apple cider, brown sugar, and maple syrup. Put over medium/high heat and melt until the honey and brown sugar have melted and you have a liquid, this will just take a few minutes.
Pour half the honey mixture over the top of the ham to coat it completely. Use a pastry brush to brush the sides as needed to ensure it’s completely coated.
Step 4
Cover the ham with foil. Bake for 45 minutes to 1 hour or until the internal temperature is 140°F.
Step 5
Remove foil and add the remaining honey mixture to the ham. Turn oven to 400°F and bake for an additional 10 to 15 minutes, to brown the ham. Careful not to burn as honey and sugar can burn easily.
Step 6
There will be excess honey mixture in your baking dish, use the extra to drizzle over ham for serving for a little extra sweetness. Garnish with fresh apples, cranberries, and rosemary (optional).
Baker's Tips
- I use Organic Prairie Bone In Half Ham, which is about 5 pounds. I love their ham because it’s fully cooked, it’s 100% organic, and it tastes amazing!
- I use a small saucepan to heat the ingredients together. You are just heating until the brown sugar has melted and is combined with the honey. You do not need to reduce this, but if you want a thick glaze instead, then you can reduce it as well. I don’t think the thick glaze is needed as the flavor bakes on incredibly well and it makes this recipe quick and easy. I also really like having extra for a little drizzle on the inside parts of the meat as opposed to just having the outer skin sweetened.
- I use my Milo 5.5 Qt Dutch Oven for this ham, and it fits perfect. Use code MIMIBAKES for 10% off your order. But you can also use any kind of Dutch oven of that size, or even a shallow baking dish as you will cover it with foil.
- I remove the foil and turn up the heat to 400°F for the last 10 to 15 minutes of baking to brown the ham. Be sure to check in to make sure you are not burning the skin.
- Allow your ham to rest for at least 15 minutes before slicing it. This will ensure the juices do not run out and you have a moist ham.
- Ham can be overcooked easily, especially with fully cooked hams. So, if your oven runs hot you can start with a little less time and go from there.
FAQ's
If you don't have a Dutch oven, you can use a baking dish or even a roasting rack for this ham. Just be sure that the ham fits inside your cooking vessel and that you can safely cover it with foil to protect it for the first portion of baking.
