Can dogs eat granola?

Yes, as long as you are making homemade granola for dogs, then it’s safe to give to your dogs as you can control the ingredients to make sure they are dog friendly. Most all store bought granola will have some kind of ingredient that is harmful to dogs (most being sugar). So, it's best to make your own granola if you plan to share with your pup.

Some ingredients to avoid if looking for store bought granola would be sugar, raisins, almonds, xylitol, just to name a few. Sugar is not good for dogs, almonds are also harmful to dogs, and raisins and xylitol can be poisonous to dogs. These are just a few common ingredients you may find in lots of human granola, which is why it’s always safer to make homemade granola for dogs instead!

So, if you want to share granola with your dog, then this Peanut Butter Honey Granola for Dogs recipe is it (because you can eat it too!). This easy homemade granola for dogs is a simple recipe using ingredients you probably already have in your pantry. Not only that, your pup will go nuts for this!

Ingredients

individual ingredients for peanut butter honey granola for dogs laid out against a white background.
  • Oats: I use organic rolled oats, the same ones I buy for me. If your pup is gluten free, you can use certified gluten free oats too!
  • Coconut: I use organic unsweetened wide flake coconut in this recipe. This is key because some coconut can have added sugars, so be sure to check.
  • Sunflower Seeds: I use organic sunflower seeds, which are a healthy seed for dogs to enjoy!
  • Peanut Butter: Be sure to use an organic creamy peanut butter with only peanuts and salt. Dogs can have some salt, they actually need salt for their bodies to function, like humans, they just can't have too much or it will cause salt toxicity. So, some salt, in a treat like this, is totally okay. Stay away from crunchy peanut butters as dogs cannot digest whole nuts well at all, so those can cause an upset stomach. Also be sure to buy peanut butter without any added sugar, flavor, or xylitol as xylitol is extremely toxic to dogs.

Serving & Storage Tips

Homemade granola for dogs is a great food for so many different things! You can use it as a food topper and crumble up the chunks on top of food to promote eating. You can give them granola as a snack any time of day. These little clumps are great treats for training because they are small, healthy, and human food – so they are high reward.

You can also mix this granola in with plain Greek yogurt and dog safe fruits (blueberries, apples, strawberries, bananas) to give your dog a yummy afternoon snack. Or, you can mix this into homemade dog food for added crunch. Try adding this on top of our Slow Cooker Beef Dog Food, Turkey Dog Food Recipe, or Dog Burger Bowl (Homemade Beef Dog Food).

John John likes to eat this homemade granola for dogs as a treat dry. Also, add it on top of our Homemade Blueberry Pup Cup! Make sure to store granola in an airtight container in the pantry (just like you'd sore human granola).
