Ingredients

individual ingredients for chocolate coconut water laid out against a white background.
  • Coconut Milk: I use organic coconut milk as it makes this a little creamy. Make sure you are using a coconut milk with stabilizers and not a single ingredient coconut milk. My favorite for this is Vita Coco Organic Coconut Milk (unsweetened).
  • Cane Sugar: I use organic cane sugar as it provides a natural sweetness that cuts the cocoa.
  • Dutch Cocoa Powder: I use organic Dutch cocoa powder which provides a smooth, rich chocolatey flavor.
  • Coconut Water: You can use any coconut water for this recipe. The beauty of this recipe is you can use a coconut water that is less than ideal for drinking. I've made this with many different brands over the years. And while some coconut waters are not as tasty to drink, you can still use one that is less than ideal for this because of the chocolate. So, if you get one you're not a fan of, use it to make this organic coconut water instead!

Tips for Homemade Chocolate Coconut Water

  • Make sure to use a coconut milk that has stabilizers in it. While I usually buy coconut milk specifically without them (such as Jiva Organics) that kind does not work for this recipe because it will solidify small chunks in the fridge that will then never dissolve and it's less than ideal to drink. Any coconut milk in a carton or in the fridge section of the grocery store will be fine, just avoid the cans as these are usually single ingredient.
  • Be sure to use an unsweetened coconut milk as we are adding our own sweetener here with organic cane sugar.
  • Dutch cocoa powder has a smoother chocolate flavor that is not as bitter as natural, which is why I use this. But, if you prefer natural cocoa, go for it.
  • It's best to store this chocolate coconut water in a container with a lid, this way you can shake it up as it will separate a little bit, naturally. I use an old Straus milk jug as it's a perfect size. If you don't have anything this large, you can use mason jars. Just be sure to split up the chocolate coconut water into smaller mason jars when it's warm so everything is cohesive and combined.
