What is whipped cream frosting?

Whipped Cream Frosting is probably one of my favorite kinds of frosting because it's so light and delicious! It's made up of heavy whipping cream, powdered sugar, and vanilla extract. You whisk these three ingredients in a stand mixer (or using a hand mixer) until stiff peaks form.

The process is exactly the same as making whipped cream from scratch. However, the result is a sweeter and more sturdy whipped cream that you can use for frosting cakes or cupcakes.

I love adding this homemade whipped cream frosting on top of sheet cakes or frosting naked cakes with it as those types of cake allow it to just be rustic, pillowy, and fluffy. This frosting is especially delicious when you have cakes with fresh fruit like strawberries, cherries, blackberries, raspberries, or blueberries.

Ingredients

  • Heavy Whipping Cream: I use organic heavy whipping cream, Organic Valley is my top choice. You can use pasteurized or unpasteurized, either works.
  • Powdered Sugar: I use organic powdered sugar for sweetness and it also helps make this frosting a bit more sturdy than just whipped cream.
  • Vanilla Extract: Use your favorite high quality organic vanilla extract.

Baker's Tips

  • Use high quality organic heavy whipping cream. My favorite is Organic Valley!
  • Whipped Cream Frosting is similar to making homemade whipped cream, so if you've done that before then you got this in the bag! It's a very easy frosting to make and it whips up in just a few minutes in a stand mixer. It will take longer with a hand mixer.
  • Make sure to serve this immediately or store whatever you made with it in the fridge as the cream needs to be refrigerated.

How to Use Homemade Whipped Cream Frosting

Use on your favorite cake or cupcakes. I love this frosting on the Cherry Cake With Whipped Cream Frosting which uses a pink version! For a lighter chocolate cake, try it on Avocado Oil Chocolate Cake in place of the chocolate frosting. I love the simple chocolate and vanilla combo here!

Just be sure to store anything with this Whipped Cream Frosting in the fridge. Because this is made up of mostly cream, it needs to be refrigerated. This frosting goes especially well with cakes with light and fruity flavors like Simple Strawberry Shortcake Cupcakes. And, it's such a nice compliment to spice, such as in the Pumpkin Pie Cake with Whipped Cream Frosting.

You can also replace the frosting on any cake recipe for this. I've used this on Eggless Chocolate Heart Cake, Strawberry Snack Cake, Festive Gingerbread Snack Cake Without Frosting, Maple Spice Cake With Brown Sugar Frosting, Eggless Strawberry Zucchini Cake, Chocolate Cupcakes Without a Mixer, Small Batch Chocolate Cake With Sourdough Discard, or Traditional Butter Pound Cake Loaf.

Homemade Whipped Cream Frosting FAQ's

What is the difference between ultra-pasteurized or pasteurized heavy whipping cream?

The main difference here is the temperature the cream was heated to before packaging. What that means for you is the ultra-pasteurized will last longer than just pasteurized. So, if you are purchasing cream and won't use it right away, definitely opt for the ultra-pasteurized. If you're going to use it that day, then no worries you can get either one. They both will still whip up the same delicious and fluffy Whipped Cream Frosting.

How do you store homemade whipped cream frosting?

This needs to be stored in the fridge because of the heavy cream. So, any cakes or cupcakes made with this frosting need to be kept refrigerated.
