Best Ways to Cook Eggs for Dogs

Scrambled

Scrambled eggs is John John's favorite way to enjoy them, so that's how we cook eggs for him. You can scramble eggs for your dog, just like you would scramble them for you. The only thing you need to be mindful of is using a dog safe oil to coat the pan. The best oils for dogs are extra virgin olive oil and coconut oil.

If you are cooking scrambled eggs for yourself and want to give your dog a few bites and you are using a high quality organic butter, a few bites is fine (just make sure they are free of salt and pepper). This is how John John eats them and my husband will just remove a few pieces before he adds salt and pepper. Always ensure your scrambled eggs are free of salt, pepper and seasoning before sharing with your dog.

Hard Boiled

Hard boiled is a great way to cook eggs for dogs as they are gently cooked. Just ensure that hard boiled eggs are plain and free of any seasonings or spices. Don't feed your dog egg salad or deviled eggs! Hard boiled eggs are great to prep in advance and chop up and add into homemade dog food or even use as treats.

Poached

Because poached eggs are gently cooked, it is okay to share some of your poached egg with your dog. A little runny yolk is okay. Poached eggs are just not ideal for cooking in advance and storing, so this is not the best method to use if you are cooking homemade dog food. But, a few little bites or egg yolk licks are fine.

Ingredients

  • Eggs: Make sure to use organic eggs, as organic ingredients matter for your dog, just like they do for you.
  • Olive Oil: I use organic extra virgin olive oil to coat the pan. But, if you want to use coconut oil that also works too. Both of these are wonderful fats for dogs. If you are cooking scrambled eggs for yourself and want to share a few pieces with your dog, you can use an organic butter, that’s also fine too.

Can dogs have egg shells?

If you want to give your dog eggshells, you can but they need to be cleaned, dried and ground into a fine powder to avoid choking and sharp pieces. Eggshells have calcium, which is why people do this. But if you are feeding a fresh food only diet, like we do, there’s a better option for calcium for dogs than eggshells in my opinion.

Dogs need the correct ratio of calcium to phosphorus, and this traditionally came from dogs eating raw bones. So, bones are the best way to get the exact 2:1 ratio of calcium to phosphorus because eggshells only provide calcium.

I use the Four Leaf Rover Bone Powder for this as it’s so much easier and I don’t have to grind up eggshells. So, I don’t really think the eggshells are worth it, in my opinion.

Can puppies eat eggs?

Yes, puppies can eat eggs as long as they are fully cooked and plain.
