Why You'll Love This Recipe
Creamy Hot Chocolate: I was asked by my friends at Organic Valley to create a creamy hot chocolate recipe. So I created this 4 ingredient hot chocolate recipe that's made with dark chocolate. My Dark Hot Chocolate is creamy, very chocolatey, and totally delicious! And if you use Organic Valley Whole Milk, it makes it even better.
Nostalgic: I top this Dark Hot Chocolate with my Homemade Whipped Cream and milk chocolate shavings. In high school, my best friend and I would go downtown and sit at this boutique local coffee shop, it reminded me of Serendipity in the movie. And they had the best hot cocoa and they always had milk chocolate shavings on top of the whipped cream. It creates a sort of malty, creamy, chocolate flavor that you can't get with anything else. You must try it!

Step by Step Instructions
Step 1
To make the whipped cream: In the bowl of a stand mixer fitted with the whisk attachment, or in a bowl using a hand mixer, add all the ingredients. Slowly start to mix, so it doesn’t splatter, and gradually increase the speed while the mixture thickens until you are at full speed. Whisk until stiff peaks form and the whipped cream doesn’t fall off the whisk. (This step is optional if you want homemade whipped cream!).
Step 2
To make the cocoa: Add the milk, dark chocolate, cane sugar, and cocoa into a 2-quart saucepan. Put over high heat.
Whisk until all ingredients dissolve and the temperature reaches 160°F on a drink thermometer. Remove from heat.
Step 3
To make the chocolate shavings: Use a chocolate shaver (or you can use a carrot peeler) and shave off pieces from a bar of milk chocolate.
Step 4
To serve: Pour into glasses, and top with whipped cream, and chocolate shavings.
Tips for Making the Best “coffee shop” Dark Hot Chocolate
- Use Organic Valley Whole Milk. I cannot stress this enough, if you want a rich and creamy hot chocolate, then use whole milk!
- Use chocolate and cocoa that is high quality. Sometimes people think one single ingredient doesn't matter because you're mixing a bunch of them together. However, that is completely not the case as all the ingredients make up end flavor of the recipe. So, make sure to use high quality chocolate and cocoa that you like the flavor of. There's so many different kinds out there!
- Use Organic Valley Heavy Whipping Cream and make your own whipped cream from scratch. This is a huge difference maker in enjoying a delicious hot chocolate! Homemade whipped cream is a million times better than one bought.
- The chocolate shavings make this drink extra special. They are such as easy topping, but something that completely elevates your hot chocolate. They are totally worth it!
FAQ's
Yes, if you want to use dairy free milk you can do that too. My favorite is coconut milk for hot chocolate!
You can, but I would recommend using a dark chocolate chip that is meant for melting, or one that doesn't have any stabilizers in it as it will melt much better.
Yes, if you just swap out the milk for your favorite dairy free milk then the hot chocolate is vegan. Leave off the whipped cream and milk chocolate shavings or use dark chocolate instead.
