Ingredients

individual ingredients for chocolate dipped animal crackers laid out against a white background.
  • Animal Crackers: Use your favorite organic animal crackers! I used the Costco Kirkland Organic Animal Crackers in this recipe today. But Whole Foods and Trader Joe's store brand of organic animal crackers are also amazing.
  • Dark Chocolate: Use your favorite organic dark chocolate! I used Mama Ganache which is perfect for melting. Make sure you are using a chocolate without stabilizers so it will melt really well. This is ingredients like soy lecithin or sunflower lecithin. So, if your chocolate chips have either of those, don't use them as they will not melt well. You can also use a chopped up dark chocolate bar!
  • Rainbow Sprinkles: I used ColorKitchen Nonpareil Sprinkles as these are made with plant based dyes, but feel free to use different ones as well. You can even switch it up for holidays with just the sprinkles! Try red and green for Christmas or pink for Valentine's Day.

Flavor Variations

  • Double Chocolate: Use chocolate animal crackers and sprinkle with chocolate sprinkles, these are insanely delicious!
  • Chocolate Peppermint: Use milk (or dark) chocolate and add 1 teaspoon of peppermint extract into the chocolate. Dip, and then sprinkle with holiday sprinkles, these are perfect for Christmas!
  • Valentine's Day: Use natural pink and purple sprinkles for a festive treat without artificial colors.
  • White Chocolate: Use white chocolate in place of dark chocolate for the vanilla lovers.
  • Chocolate Strawberry: Instead of sprinkles, add crushed freeze dried strawberries on top for beautifully pink animal crackers with a sweet subtle crunch!

Baker's Tips

  • Use your favorite animal crackers! I love the Kirkland Organic Animal Crackers but the Trader Joe's Organic Animal Crackers and Whole Foods Organic Vanilla Animal Crackers are also so yummy!
  • I am using ColorKitchen Nonpareil Sprinkles in these Chocolate Dipped Animal Crackers, but if you want to use traditional rainbow sprinkles you can use those as well. My favorite are India Tree Nature's Colors Carnival Sprinkles. Or if you are looking for a more bright and vibrant sprinkle, then use India Tree Nature's Colors Fiesta Sprinkles. Shop all my favorite plant based sprinkles that are free of artificial dyes in my Amazon shop.
  • I don't temper the chocolate in this recipe, as I store them in the fridge as I like to eat them out of the fridge. If you want to serve them at a party, especially given the warm weather, I would definitely temper the chocolate! Follow my steps in How to Temper Chocolate for Candy Making if you'd like to do that.

Chocolate Dipped Animal Crackers FAQ's

Can I use another kind of chocolate?

Yes, feel free to use milk or white chocolate instead. Just be sure you are using a melting chocolate that is free of stabilizers.

Do I need to temper the chocolate for dipping?

No, you do not need to temper the chocolate. While I provide instructions for how to do this, it's completely optional. If you don't temper the chocolate, you will just want to store in the fridge so the chocolate doesn't sweat. To be honest, I really never temper the chocolate unless I'm gifting!

What’s the best way to melt chocolate (double boiler vs microwave)?

Both options work. It just depends on your preference. I prefer to use my microwave as I think it's easier and more forgiving. Because I have a gas stove, which can get very hot, and I don't like using the double boiler as much as if the heat is too hot, you can easily scorch or burn the chocolate and it can seize up. An electric range doesn't get as hot and when I melted chocolate at my bakery, and had electric, I thought it was much easier than even the microwave as it melted just so well. So, depending on your range, you may want to use it or use the microwave.

Can I use different sprinkles?

Yes, use any kind you like. You can even make these festive for holidays with pink and purple for Valentine's Day or red and green for Christmas.

Can I use a different kind of cookie if I don’t have animal crackers?

Yes, you can use graham crackers or even other store bought or homemade cookies if you like.

Can I make these gluten free?

Yes, just use your favorite gluten free graham crackers.

How do I store chocolate dipped animal crackers and how long do they last?

Store them in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 7 days. They can also be frozen in an airtight container for up to 3 months.
