What is Worms in Dirt?

Worms in dirt is a children's dessert that is made up of either chocolate pudding (or ice cream), crushed up Oreos, and gummy worms. The chocolate pudding (or ice cream) and cookies are meant to act as the dirt and the worms are there for fun. Depending on where you grew up, you may or may not have eaten this silly but so delicious dessert.

They served this to kids at our country club growing up, so it was always something that was a special treat for us as it was the only place we ever ate it! But it was definitely not organic Worms in Dirt! Gummy worms are full of artificial colors, and pudding mix (even chocolate) can also have artificial colors! Why I’m not sure, but it does.

So today I am sharing a homemade Worms in Dirt recipe with you guys. This is an organic Worms in Dirt recipe that you can feel good about sharing with your kids. Plus, you can feel good about taking a bite and going down memory lane.

I use Black Forest Organic Gummy Worms which have no artificial colors and are colored with vegetables. They are really good gummy worms and they taste just like the classics that are full of all the bad stuff. I use my From Scratch Chocolate Pudding recipe in this organic Worms in Dirt recipe. And, to top it off, I use Newman’s Own O’s for this entirely organic Worms in Dirt!

FAQ's

Can I use store bought pudding?

Yes, feel free to use store bought pudding if you prefer. Petit Pot makes a delicious organic chocolate pudding you can find at Whole Foods that I really like!

How should I store leftovers?

It's best to assemble these as you eat them. So, I recommend just making however many you need in the moment. Then store extra pudding in an airtight container in the fridge and you can assemble more the next day for another treat.
