This Vanilla Bean Buttermilk French Toast uses Sourdough Irish Soda Bread for thick cut slices that soak up the egg and buttermilk mixture for fluffy and flavorful French toast! I use vanilla bean and nutmeg in place of traditional cinnamon in this easy weekend French toast.

You will love this recipe because I use thick cut slices of Sourdough Irish Soda Bread. This bread already has amazing flavor, thanks to the buttermilk, so I keep it going with and use buttermilk along with eggs to soak these slices. Instead of traditional cinnamon, I use ground vanilla bean and just a pinch of nutmeg in this easy weekend French toast recipe!

You will love switching it up with this French toast with vanilla bean! I love using vanilla bean as it brings a more robust vanilla flavor to desserts and cooking. French toast is one of my favorite weekend breakfasts. It ranks second next to waffles, but with it being so much faster and easier than waffles, it kind of ties it up for me. If I’m craving a sweet breakfast with syrup, this easy weekend French toast is it!

Bold Flavor: This French toast with vanilla bean provides a bold and unique flavor profile that vanilla extract just doesn't stack up to.

Step by Step Instructions

Step 1

First step is to crack the eggs and whisk together with the buttermilk in a large bowl or shallow dish. Then add in the vanilla bean and nutmeg and whisk together.

Step 2

Slice the bread into 1-inch thick slices. I also cut these in half before soaking and frying because the Sourdough Irish Soda Bread is very long slices.

Step 3

Get your skillet ready, I use a 10-inch cast iron skillet for this. You can also use any skillet, frying pan, or griddle! Put over medium/high heat and add the butter and allow it to coat the pan while it heats.

Step 4

Soak the bread in the egg mixture. Be sure that it’s soaked well, and it is completely covered in the mixture, as you don’t want dry parts of your French toast. Don’t soak it too long, as this bread can break if soaked too long. I find the perfect time is starting to soak it is when I turn on the stovetop, while it’s heating up.

Step 5

Once the butter has coated the pan and your skillet is hot, add to soaked brad to the skillet. Cook until golden brown about 1 to 2 minutes per side.

Step 6

Serve with maple syrup, fresh fruit, Homemade Whipped Cream or Lemon Curd.

FAQ's

Do I need to use Sourdough Irish Soda Bread?

I use Sourdough Irish Soda Bread for this recipe because it’s a dense bread that soaks up the egg mixture really well. If you don’t have this you can use any other type of bread you want, it will still be delicious! I’ve also made this with sourdough, white, and wheat!

What if I don’t have buttermilk?

You can easily make your own Homemade Buttermilk! But, if you still don’t want to do that, you can also just substitute regular milk as the recipe will still work. But, buttermilk really gives this recipe more depth of flavor!

What if I don’t have vanilla bean?

I highly recommend getting organic ground vanilla bean for this recipe! You can substitute vanilla extract, but double the amount, as it’s not as strong as ground vanilla bean. However, it won’t have the same flavor.

What can I serve this with?

I love making my Homemade Pork Breakfast Sausages to go with this easy weekend French toast. You can also top it with strawberries, blueberries, blackberries, Homemade Whipped Cream, or Lemon Curd!
