Equipment

  • Small Pot
  • Box Grater

Ingredients

  • ½ pound ground wild caught salmon
  • 1 tablespoon coconut oil
  • 1 cup white rice
  • 1 carrot
  • 1 red pepper
  • ½ cup purple cabbage

Instructions

  • Cook the rice per the instructions on the bag. Or if you are using leftover rice, you can warm it up in the microwave or you can warm it up in a skillet with all the other ingredients as well!
  • In a large skillet over medium heat, add the coconut oil and coat the pan. Add the ground salmon and cook until fully cooked through, about 10 minutes.
  • Use a large box grater and grate the carrot. Dice red pepper and chop purple cabbage into small pieces.
  • In your dogs bowl, add the rice, salmon, carrots, red pepper, and cabbage and serve immediately.

Tips
  • Never give your dog raw salmon as that can cause symptoms like upset stomach and more for your pup.
  • You can replace the salmon with any meat your dog likes. Chicken, turkey, ground beef, beef chuck, or even ground lamb all work! Just be sure to feed higher fat proteins more moderately and not make them a daily part of your dog's diet.
  • If you're sharing salmon with your dog (like we do often!) be sure it's free of spices, onions, and salmon skin. "Dog salmon" should just be plainly cooked with dog safe oils like coconut or olive oil.
  • Feel free to use any color bell pepper, all are safe for dogs. You can also swap out veggies for other dog safe veggies such as green beans, peas, or broccoli.
  • Brown rice and wild rice are safe for dogs, but can be harder for dog's to digest, which is why we stick to Jasmin rice.
  • If your dog doesn't like rice (it's actually not John John's favorite!) then use mashed sweet potato or butternut squash. If using sweet potatoes, be sure to remove all skins as those can be toxic to dogs. Check out How to Cook Sweet Potatoes for Dogs.
