Equipment

  • 3-Quart Pot
  • Cast Iron Skillet

Ingredients

  • 1 sweet potato
  • 2 bell peppers (any color)
  • 1 large carrot
  • 1 ½ tablespoons coconut oil
  • 1 pound ground chicken

Instructions

  • In a large skillet, put over medium/high heat. Melt the coconut oil and then add in the ground chicken. Break it up with a spatula and continue to cook until it’s fully cooked, about 10 minutes. Remove from heat.
  • Peel the sweet potato and slice into ¼-inch thick slices. Add the sweet potatoes to a medium pot, and fill with water. Put over high heat and boil for about 15 minutes, until they are soft when poked with a fork.
  • Slice the bell peppers into small pieces, making sure to remove all seeds. Slice the carrot into thins slices. Place into a bowl and set aside.
  • Once the sweet potatoes are almost done, add in the carrots and peppers and continue to boil for 2 to 3 minutes until they are soft and tender as well. Remove vegetables from the heat.
  • Chop the veggies and sweet potatoes into small pieces, making sure to cut smaller if you have a smaller dog.
  • You can mix in the ground chicken and veggies together or keep them separate. I keep them separate so I can measure exactly how much protein, veggies, and carbs are in each meal.
  • Store in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 7 days.
  • To serve: Add chicken, potatoes, and veggies to a bowl and warm in microwave if desired. Use my chart How Much Homemade Food Should I Feed My Dog? for reference on how much to feed.

Tips
  • Serving Size – This makes about 10 meals for John John, about a week's worth of food. If you have a larger dog you can double or triple this recipe for a big batch. If you have a smaller dog, you can half it as you shouldn't keep food for more than 5 days in the fridge. Use my chart How Much Homemade Food Should I Feed My Dog? for reference on how much to feed. You can adjust ingredient amounts based on your dog's needs.
  • You can use any ground meat that you like, ground beef, ground turkey or ground lamb also work. Use what's best for your dog!
  • Add in extra dog safe fruits or veggies like blueberries, apples, strawberries, green beans and more. Feel free to mix it up with your dog's favorites.
  • If you want to make this homemade food even softer for your dog, feel free to add in a little liquid when reheating such as dog safe bone broth or even water.
  • Whenever prepping your dogs recipe, be sure to cook ingredients separately from yours if you are using garlic or onion as these can be toxic to dogs and you could end up with a sick dog, which we don't want!
  • If you are looking for a chicken and rice recipe, you can just leave out the sweet potato and cook rice instead for the carb. You can use Jasmin rice, brown rice or wild rice, they are all dog safe.
  • Store extra food in the refrigerator for up to a week. If you make more food than your dog will eat in a week, then you can freeze it.
