Why You'll Love This Recipe
Creamy Chocolate: This single serve hot cocoa is incredibly creamy as it's made with whole milk. If you want to make it dairy free, use organic coconut milk as that's my top pick for creamy cocoa without the dairy.
Sweet & Spicy: The Montana Mex Sweet Seasoning Mix has a little kick to it, but just the right amount of sweetness thanks to the orange. This brings so much depth and flavor to this hot chocolate!
Twist on a Classic: If you love hot cocoa, but want to mix it up, this is a delicious twist on the classic hot chocolate.

Ingredients
- Milk: I use Organic Valley Grassmilk.
- Cane Sugar: I use organic cane sugar.
- Dutch Cocoa Powder: My favorite cocoa is organic Dutch cocoa powder. This creates a rich and decadent cocoa.
- Spice: I use Montana Mex Sweet Seasoning for the perfect amount of sweet and spice.
Tools Needed
- Scale: Always use a digital food scale for the best results.
- Small Pot: I use a small pot to heat the cocoa.
- Whisk: Be sure to have a whisk to whisk together the cocoa so there are no lumps.
- Drink Thermometer: I highly recommend using a drink thermometer to ensure your milk does not burn. Milk can burn if it goes above 160°F and if it does, that flavor will transfer to your cocoa. So, using a drink thermometer is key for perfectly hot cocoa with the best flavor.
Step by Step Instructions
Step 1
In a small pot, add the milk, cane sugar, cocoa powder, and sweet seasoning.
Step 2
Put over medium/high heat, stirring with a whisk to ensure the sugar, cocoa, and spices all mix together. Continue to heat until the milk is 140°F to 160°F. Serve immediately.
Tips
- You can use any kind of milk you prefer. I have tested this both with whole milk and coconut milk and they are both insanely delicious! If you are vegan, easily use coconut milk – the coconut milk flavor actually pairs incredibly well with the spices in the seasoning mix.
- If you want to add whipped cream, make my Homemade Whipped Cream for topping!
- If you want to make more than one you can double or triple this recipe.

This spice mix has a lot going on, which is why it's so tasty! It's filled with orange peel, allspice, cloves, ginger, cinnamon, chili and more. It would be difficult to create this same flavor profile in such a small amount! So, I highly recommend picking up a jar of this spice mix to enjoy this recipe fully!
