Why You'll Love This Recipe

These simple cookies start out with a rich chocolate cookie that's kind of cakey and soft. I top it with a lemon glaze made up of powdered sugar, milk, and lemon lemon flavor. I prefer using lemon flavor when I want a sweet lemon flavor versus a tart lemon flavor. If you use lemon juice from a fresh lemon, then you will get more of a tart lemon flavor.

I finish these Lemon Frosted Chocolate Cookies with a little lemon zest for just the right amount of tart lemon. You could leave this off if you want a more sweeter cookie as well. Make sure to store these in an airtight container so they stay soft and chewy!

Can I make these gluten free?

Yes! I provide an easy gluten free flour swap in the Notes at the bottom of the recipe, so be sure to check that there if you are needing a gluten free option.

Can I use unsalted butter?

Yes, if you want to use unsalted butter you can! Just add ¼ teaspoon of salt to the recipe.

Can I make these ahead of time?

Yes, these are a great cookie to make ahead of time because the frosting needs to set. I prefer making these the night before so the frosting can set up.

What's the best way to set the frosting?

This frosting is best set overnight. But, because these cookies are soft and chewy, it can be tricky as you don't want to leave cookies out overnight uncovered as they can dry out! So, there's two methods to do this. The first is to frost the cookies, place them all on one tray, and pop the whole tray in the freezer overnight. The second method is to frost all the cookies, place them all on one tray, and then wrap the tray in plastic wrap. I don't prefer this way as I don't like using plastic wrap unless it's completely necessary. But if your freezer is full then use this method so your cookies stay soft and chewy. The following day, the frosting will be set and you can store them in an airtight container.

Why organic?

Why use organic ingredients in this recipe? You all know I’m a huge organic advocate, and I bet you may be thinking sometimes, Why would I even bother to use organic ingredients in something that is so sweet and indulgent? But, that is the exact reason why you should use organic ingredients! Sweet things need to have flavor in order to be good, otherwise they are just sweet and they don’t taste like much else. Organic ingredients are more pure than conventional ones, therefore they actually have more flavor than the non organic options. Say it with me, organic means more flavor! And not just more flavor but a more true and pure flavor. And organic ingredients are much healthier for you to eat in general as they do not contain GMOs or anything artificial. Plus, you are being environmentally friendly when you choose organic ingredients!

So, I highly recommend that you buy the best organic ingredients for this recipe! You can also shop my Amazon Storefront for all my favorite organic ingredients here.
