Summer isn't complete unless you've made Grilled BBQ Chicken at least a dozen times. Have you used your grill yet? If not, this is your reminder! So today I'm sharing a super basic recipe for Grilled BBQ Chicken. We make this recipe all the time during the summer months, and it's just so simple and so delicious!
You can use any kind of BBQ sauce you like, but my favorite is my Homemade BBQ Sauce with Bone Broth! Most all store-bought BBQ Sauces (yes even organic ones) contain “natural flavors” of some kind. These can be disruptive to some people, so I've been avoiding them whenever possible. My Homemade BBQ Sauce with Bone Broth is also free of soy! And try making my Brioche Buns so you have an easy summer dinner with chicken, rolls and fresh fruit.
Why You'll Love This Recipe
Rich, Smoky Flavor: Grilled BBQ chicken boasts a deliciously smoky flavor infused with tangy, sweet, and spicy barbecue sauce, creating an irresistible taste that satisfies any palate!
Perfectly Juicy: When grilled correctly, BBQ chicken remains juicy and tender inside while developing a flavorful, caramelized crust on the outside, offering a perfect balance of textures.
Healthier Choice: Chicken is a leaner meat and grilling allows excess fat to drip away while retaining essential nutrients and flavors.
Eat with Everything: Grilled BBQ chicken is incredibly versatile, it goes well with a variety of sides such as coleslaw, corn on the cob, or grilled vegetables, making it perfect for summer weekends.
Ingredients
Chicken: You can use organic chicken drumsticks like I did here, bone in thighs, or even boneless skinless breasts or thighs. But, I think the bone in chicken is better for the grill as it doesn't dry out as easily.
BBQ Sauce: Use your favorite organic BBQ sauce! I use my Homemade BBQ Sauce with Bone Broth as it's free of added flavors and soy.

Step by Step Instructions
Step 1
In a large bowl, add the drumsticks and BBQ sauce and toss to coat completely. Cover with plastic wrap and allow to marinate in the fridge for at least 4 hours or overnight.
Step 2
Heat grill to 350°F. We have a Monument Grills 4 Burner Gas Grill, so what I do is turn on all four burners, this helps heat the entire grill.
Step 3
Put chicken on, and then I turn the burner directly under the chicken down to low heat. Leaving additional burners (not under chicken) medium to keep the grill around 350°F to 375°F. This prevents the chicken from burning, but still allowing for a nice char, and cooking thoroughly. Continue to cook for 30 to 40 minutes or until the internal temperature is 165°F.
Step 4
Remove from the grill, cover with a piece of foil until ready to serve.
FAQ's
If you want to use chicken breasts or thighs, you can do that too! Any type of chicken will work with this recipe.
This step is optional, but I find it really gives it much more flavor! But, if you're in a hurry, feel free to brush on your BBQ sauce and just start grilling. It will still be delicious!
This is a summer staple in my house because we're always trying to take advantage of grilling season! I love serving this Grilled BBQ Chicken with salad for a light lunch or dinner. Some of my favorites include Real Simple Corn Salad, Easy Blueberry Kale Salad, and Healthy Ranch Pasta Salad. You can serve it with rolls, like my Brioche Buns, and of course fresh in season fruit like watermelon, pineapple, or berries!
