With Valentine’s Day coming up, you may have mixed feelings about this Hallmark holiday. However, there are sustainable ways to celebrate Valentine's Day! Valentine’s Day is known for being a frivolous holiday, with people celebrating with things that are potentially harmful to the environment like heart balloons, cards that will just be thrown out, or plastic hearts that end up in the trash.

So, I’m sharing 5 sustainable ways to celebrate Valentine’s Day this year so you can give some love to your friends, family, and this earth!

Give Baked Goods

Giving something sweet like cookies or homemade candy is a great way to celebrate Valentine’s Day. Make sure to gift your sweets in a reusable cookie jar or an eco friendly bag or box! If you’re looking for ideas, try my Dark Chocolate Almond Hearts, Strawberry Glazed Baked Donuts, Valentine’s Day Charcuterie Board, or Chocolate Heart Thumbprint Cookies.

Do Something Nice

Valentine’s Day doesn’t have to be all about sweets, treats, and gifts. You can show your love for people in many different ways!

  • Simple acts of kindness can be things like:
  • Shoveling the driveway and start the car for your spouse.
  • Bring a friend lunch.
  • Let your kids play hooky from school and spend the day together.
  • FaceTime your parents and set a date for your next visit.
  • Let your kids eat cake for breakfast!

Buy Organic Regenerative Chocolate

Chocolate is what everyone gravitates towards for Valentine’s Day. So, if you’re buying chocolate be sure to buy organic and fair trade chocolate or even better, organic and regenerative! You may not think chocolate is harmful to the environment, but experts estimate that 70% of the country's illegal deforestation is related to cocoa farming, according to worldwidelife.org. Some of my favorite regenerative organic chocolate comes from Alter Eco.

Give a Sustainable Gift

Since gifts are very Valentine’s Day, try giving sustainable gifts that the recipient will enjoy and not just toss after the day is over. Some great sustainable Valentine’s Day gifts include a potted plant, an eco friendly candle, an organic bubble bath, a massage gift certificate.

Wear Valentine’s Day Colors

Nothing like getting into the spirit of a holiday by wearing the holiday colors! Wear pink or red to celebrate! I have some cute Valentine’s Day styles in my shop that you can even wear year round, which makes them even more sustainable! Use code BUTTER for 10% off your order!
