Today I’m sharing 5 Cozy Drinks to Help You Sleep. March is National Sleep Month and as we wrap it up I thought it was the perfect time to share! Many Americans don’t get enough sleep. With all the things we have to do, want to do, or even just lie away awake at night thinking about doing – it’s no wonder that 1 in 3 adults don’t get enough sleep!

So, are you in the two thirds of people that get enough sleep or are you struggling once your head hits the pillow? Maybe you’ve tried over the counter medicine or meditation, but you’re still coming up short on your shut eye.

Food can help in this department! There are many organic ingredients that can help your body promote sleep, that also taste delicious! Try adopting one of these 5 Cozy Drinks to Help You Sleep and start a new nighttime routine. First, let's talk about some ingredients that hep you sleep!

Ingredients That Help Sleep

Almond Milk

In order to sleep, you must be relaxed. And magnesium can help your body do just that. Which is why it’s known to help with sleep. Magnesium not only helps you get to sleep, but it also helps promote a very restful sleep. And if you have trouble sleeping then you know, restful sleep is just important as actual sleep! Magnesium should be consumed about 30 minutes before sleep time to help your get the maximum amount of shut eye from it.

Almond milk is great for non dairy drinkers as one cup of almond milk can have up to 17 mg of magnesium! This is why almond milk can help you sleep. Always make sure you’re drinking unsweetened almond milk, as sugar can keep you up. Almonds also contain tryptophan, according to the National Sleep Foundation. Tryptophan is known to make you sleepy (think Thanksgiving Turkey).

Bone Broth

Bone Broth contains the amino acid glycine. And this has been shown to help for sleep. Try drinking Bone Broth about 1 hour before bed to help promote a better night’s sleep. My favorite bone broth comes from Kettle & Fire, use code MIMIBAKESCOOKIES for 20% off!

Chamomile Tea

Chamomile tea is known to help with sleep. It has a sedative quality to it that can be amazing for helping you close your eyes as soon as your head hits the pillow. Not only that, but it also helps improve sleep quality so that you sleep well through the night!

Dairy Milk

Cow’s milk has tryptophan in it, yes that same thing that’s in Turkey. So, you know at Thanksgiving when everyone wants to take a Turkey nap? It’s because of the tryptophan.

Tryptophan is an amino acid your body needs to make Vitamin B3 and serotonin, a hormone that helps you relax and therefore become sleepy! So, drinking dairy milk before bed can have the same effect as eating a big Turkey dinner, but without the full stomach.

Honey

Honey is a great ingredient to eat before bed. Not only is it a natural sweetener, so you can skip the sugar, while still indulging. But honey also promotes melatonin formation, due to its possible tryptophan content. This can help initiate sleep and promote the release of hormones that facilitate whole body recovery during sleep.

Kava Tea

Kava tea is known for its relaxing qualities. I’ve been drinking Kava tea for a long time because I love the flavor. But if I drink it in the daytime, I become so sleepy! So, I drink this tea at night a lot, and it knocks me right out! The Yogi Kava Stress Relief is my favorite.

Lavender

Lavender tea can help you sleep as it promotes relaxation and enhances sleep quality. Lavender is known as a relaxing essential oil and scent. Lavender essential oil can also be used as a sleep aid by adding a few drops to your pillow or temples before bed as well.

Turmeric

Turmeric can improve your mood, lower anxiety, and promote relaxation. All of those things combined can definitely help you sleep. Turmeric is an herb that’s been used for many years as a sleep aid.
